Barcelona day one - Vettel steals Alonso’s thunder

A late run from reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel was enough to prevent local hero Fernando Alonso topping the times in Friday’s opening day of testing at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. Vettel lapped his Red Bull just over a second quicker than Alonso’s Ferrari.

With the day starting on a damp track which quickly dried, there was a wide spread of times amongst the 13 drivers present. Third fastest was Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari, who edged out Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi by less than a hundredth of a second.

Full report to follow.

Testing will continue in Barcelona on Saturday.

Unofficial Friday test times from Barcelona:

1. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, 1:24.374
2. Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, 1:25.485

Barcelona on standby to replace Bahrain test

The Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) is considering staying in Barcelona for the final pre-season test as the situation in Bahrain remains uncertain.

With talk of the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix being cancelled due to anti-government protests in the country, the March 3-6 test the week before is also awaiting the go-ahead. However, the teams still need to complete their testing programmes ahead of the first race and have approached the Circuit de Catalunya, where they are testing from Friday to Monday this weekend, about the possibility of another week's running if the situation does not improve.

"FOTA has asked us what dates we have available at the prospect of being unable to go to the last test, but there is no formal request yet," Vicenc Aguilera, the new president of the Circuit de Catalunya consortium, is quoted by El Pais newspaper.

Aguilera said the circuit is booked on some of the days between the end of this week's test and early March. "But if F1 asks us something, we will do our best to please," he insisted.

FOTA will meet in Barcelona on Friday, as the four days of scheduled pre-season testing begins.

Bahrain GP2 Asia race cancelled
By Jonathan Noble

GP2 Asia organisers have cancelled this weekend's second round of the series in Bahrain in the wake of the deteriorating political situation in the Gulf state.

With a number of deaths having been reported overnight after police forcefully moved in to drive protesters out of their camp in Manama, race organisers felt there was no choice but to call the GP2 race off.

Shortly after it was announced that Thursday's programme had been delayed because medical staff could not be present at the Sakhir circuit as they were needed in Manama, GP2 confirmed that the rest of the weekend's programme was cancelled following a request from the local motorsport federation.

A statement issued by GP2 organisers said: "Following the current events in Bahrain, at the request of the Bahrain Motorsport Federation, it has been decided that the remainder of the meeting which was supposed to take place this week at Bahrain International Circuit is cancelled due to force majeure."

The cancellation of the GP2 Asia Series round adds fresh doubts about the possibility of the looming Formula 1 pre-season test and opening round of the world championship taking place next month.

F1 teams are due to test in Bahrain from March 3-6, with the opening round of the championship currently scheduled to take place on March 13.

Both F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and FIA president Jean Todt have so far vowed only to keep a watching brief over events before deciding if the Bahrain Grand Prix can go ahead.

Todt told Irish media on Wednesday that the FIA would not rush into a decision and would wait until this weekend's GP2 Asia event had taken place before deciding on a course of action.

He said: "I always try not to over-react on breaking stories. Number one, you have to check what is the reality - which is not always what you hear - and to react without too much emotion and to face properly the problem.

"There has been some movement in Bahrain. I understand things are improving and we have to wait.

"The next step is the GP2 race this weekend... Of course the essence of the FIA is safety; safety on the racing car, safety on the road, safety in our organisation. So that's what we are claiming, but at the moment there is no reason to have unnecessary concern."

A decision on whether the pre-season Bahrain test goes ahead could well be made on Friday, with sources revealing to AUTOSPORT that teams are due to meet in Barcelona for a scheduled get-together of FOTA's Sporting Working Regulation Group.

AUTOSPORT understands that the Bahrain test will be discussed in the Friday meeting.

Decision on Bahrain GP next week - Ecclestone

Bernie Ecclestone has said a decision on whether the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix will go ahead will be made next week. His comments come in the light of overnight violence in the state and the cancellation of the GP2 Asia race at the weekend.

Less than 24 hours after appearing relaxed about the situation, Ecclestone was forced to admit that it "doesn't look good".

"We'll have to keep our eye on things and make a decision quickly," he told the Press Association. "I spoke to the Crown Prince this morning. He doesn't know any more than you or I, but they're monitoring exactly what is going on. Next week we will make a decision on what we are going to do."

There was also a marked change of mood within the FIA. Yesterday, Jean Todt, the president, said he tried "not to overreact on breaking stories," adding there was "no reason for unnecessary concern". But today an FIA spokesman admitted "the president is looking at the matter closely and when there is something to announce we will let everybody know".

The decision could well be taken out of their hands as the teams are due to meet on Friday when they might agree to stay away.

The comments of two GP2 personnel in Bahrain - Team Air Asia's Davide Valsecchi and Racing Engineering team principal Alfonso- might well help some of them decide.

"My hotel is just 800m away from the centre of the riot and I could hear shots of machine guns," said Valsecchi, while d'Orleans-Borbon commented: "There are Saudi tanks everywhere, and during the night we heard shots."

The pre-season testing, scheduled to begin on March 3, looks increasingly unlikely to go ahead.

More details are emerging of violent clashes which left four dead and 300 injured in the capital Manama. Reports suggest around 2000 people in the city's main square, many of whom were asleep, were set on by around 200 security personnel using batons, tear gas and rubber bullets.

Vuelta a vuelta F150th-RB7-MP4/26

BARCELONA TEST – Day Two
Driver: Sebastian Vettel
Car: RB7 – 01
Laps: 104
Best time: 1:23.315
Circuit length: 4.655km
Fastest lap: S. Vettel (see above)

Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel went quickest again today day as the team continued work on the second day of its test weekend in Barcelona. Today, with race team personnel present, the team aimed to get through simulations of a race weekend P3, qualifying session and a race simulation.

The work largely went according to plan as Head of Race Engineering, Ian Morgan, explains: “Generally it was good today and we got through almost everything we wanted to. We had a few small problems, such as an issue with a heat shield. But that’s why we do these tests, to iron out any little problems, and generally the simulations went well.” Mark Webber will take over driving duties tomorrow, when the team will run a similar programme to today. “The weather is forecast to deteriorate a bit overnight, which may make it difficult to run the simulations, but hopefully we can do the same simulations with Mark that we did with Seb today.”

Press release
Test in Barcelona – Day two

Barcelona, 19th February 2011 – On his second day of testing in Barcelona Kamui Kobayashi enyojed a trouble free day at the wheel of the Sauber C30-Ferrari. With a total of 125 laps he was able to complete a comprehensive programme.

Circuit: Barcelona / 4.655 km
Driver: Kamui Kobayashi (JP)
Weather: Sunny, partly overcast, air 6 -17°C, track 7-19°C
Chassis / engine: C30.02 / Ferrari 056
Mileage today: 125 laps
Fastest lap: 1:24.243 min (in the afternoon)

James Key (Technical Director): “We completed 125 laps, which is good. It was a case of working through some programmes to understand more about the tyres. Barcelona is a good track to get a handle on tyres, but the cold condtions this morning made it a little tricky with high wear on the front tyres, although this was probably not unique to us. We ran through a race set up programme this morning using all three compounds – hard, medium and soft – to get an overview of the longevity of their performance. This also allowed Kamui to work on managing the tyres from a driver’s perspective. In the afternoon we worked on the set-up and used a new package to improve mechanical grip, and this looks okay. We also worked with the different compounds, but this time with set-up changes between them to understand better their one lap performance, although it wasn’t a qualifying simulation. We recovered well after a slightly tricky day yesterday, and Kamui did a very good job.”

Kamui Kobayashi
: “We had no technical problems at all, and I think this was the first time we were able to complete the whole programme. We worked on the set-up, and we now have a better understanding of the tyres. We collected a lot of data, and I’m happy with what we achieved today.”

What comes next: Sergio Pérez will take over for the final two days of testing in Barcelona.
