Le Mans is underway, problems for Premat
Le Mans - 24 Heures du Mans - Update 1 – Start
The start of the 77th running of the classic Le Mans 24 hour race at Circuit de la Sarthe saw Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo give the official start signal in sunny and fine conditions with a massive crowd on hand to witness a predicted Peugeot-Audi battle for supremacy.
Franck Montagny led the way from pole position in the #8 Peugeot 908 Hdi FAP from Allan McNish in the #1 Audi R15 TDI challenging into the Dunlop Curve before slotting in behind the race leader.
At the end of the Mulsanne straight Pedro Lamy ducked out from behind McNish and relived the Scotsman of second position with Wurz close behind in fourth position having got the jump on the leading #17 Pescarolo 908 Hdi FAP. By lap two, Wurz managed to get ahead of McNish to make it a Peugeot one-two-three with McNish down to fourth.
McNish led the Audi challenge but there was drama for Alex Premat in the #3 Audi R15 on lap two as the Frenchman locked the rear brakes and then speared off into the gravel trap at Adelaide.
The R15 made light contact with the tyre barrier before being removed by the safety crews and retuning to the pits.
Jean Christophe Boullion is fifth as of 15.15 in the Pescarolo Peugeot diesel ahead of the #2 Audi driven by Mike Rockenfeller. Lola Aston Martin are next up with Stefan Mucke and Darren Turner holding down seventh and eighth positions respectively. Premat is back in the race but has already lost a number of laps in the #3 Audi.
Updates will continue throughout the 24 hour race with reports every two hours in daylight and three hours once night falls.
