--------------------------
Nissan poised to ‘electrify’ Le Mans
Le Mans organisers ACO have accepted the project proposed by Nissan/Nismo as the ‘Garage 56’ entry for the 2014 24-hour race. The French circuit’s 56th pit is reserved for cars which feature innovative technologies. The ‘ZEOD RC’ is a ‘hybrid’ car (petrol/electricity) designed by Ben Bowlby, the man behind the DeltaWing which starred in the 2012 race.
In the industry, some carmakers prefer not to use the term ‘hybrid’, which they say is a Toyota term – if not officially, at least morally. Instead, Nissan’s exciting new electric racer has been baptised the ZEOD RC, which stands for ‘Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car’. The newcomer was visible first of all to fans in the Village area at the track, with the scene relayed to a press conference in the paddock.
Its mission will be to help the Yokohama-based manufacturer evaluate variants of its new electric drivetrain technologies as it prepares for a possible return to endurance racing’s premier LMP1 class. It would obviously like to become the second Japanese make to win the Le Mans 24 Hours after Mazda, in 1991. Nissan also promises that the technologies developed through the ZEOD RC programme will serve future road-going models.
“We are seeing a growing demand for EVs globally,” says Billy Hayes, Nissan’s Vice-President in charge of global sales of the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle. “The future of mobility will see a range of solutions that will include hybrids, range extenders, fuel cells and battery electric vehicles. We’ll be trying many of these technologies during the development of the Nissan ZEOD RC.”
The design team is headed by British engineer Ben Bowlby whose official job title is now ‘Director of Motorsport Innovation’ at Nissan. The former Lola designer was the man behind the Nissan-engined DeltaWing which was selected as the ‘Garage 56’ project for the 2012 race. Indeed, the new prototype’s lines, and notably its narrow front end, bear more than just a passing resemblance to last year’s futuristic machine!
“As recently as 10 years ago, I didn’t ever think there was a future in electric racing cars,” says Bowlby. “I was convinced the technology wouldn’t make it. But we are there today; electric vehicles and electric race cars are a reality. People tend to resist change like crazy, but change is the only constant. This is a fascinating project, with fascinating prospects!”
To produce tyres for the new electric prototype, Nissan has joined forces with Michelin, just as it did for the DeltaWing when the French company rose successfully to the challenge of developing exceptionally narrow front tyres (100mm) in record time. Nissan also won last year’s Japanese Super GT Championship on the French firm’s rubber.
“Whenever we have worked together, Michelin has always helped us by providing solutions that make a real contribution to the performance of our cars, acknowledges the director of Nissan/Nismo Motorsport Darren Cox. “It was only natural, therefore, that we should turn to Michelin to work with us on this new project.”
