Barber Motorsports Park es un autódromo de la localidad de Birmingham, estado de Alabama, Estados Unidos e inaugurado en el año 2003. El trazado, de 3.700 metros de longitud, fue diseñado por Alan Wilson. El Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum es un museo anexo a la pista, que cuenta con más de 900 automóviles y motocicletas de carreras.

El circuito recibe cada año a la Rolex Sports Car Series, el Campeonato de la AMA de Superbikes y carreras de automóviles históricos. Asimismo, la IndyCar Series usa Barber como pista de pruebas desde 2007, y varias escuelas de pilotaje lo usan para entrenar a pilotos..



La batalla por el campeonato de los Prototipos Daytona tendrá su siguiente capítulo este domingo en el circuito de 16 curvas del trazado Birmingham, Alabama, como 8ª fecha de la temporada 2009.

El año pasado, Scott Pruett venció a Darren Law por ajustados 0s341de diferencia, en lo que fue en ese momento el cuarto final más cerrado de la Serie Rolex Grand-Am. Para la dupla Pruett-Rojas esa fue la sexta y última victoria de la temporada que los vio coronarse campeones al mando del Lexus Riley N° 01 del equipo Telmex-Chip Ganassi Racing.

Un año más tarde, Pruett y Memo Jr. regresan con la ventaja de un punto (198-197) sobre el duo Brian Frisselle-Max Angelelli, estos últimos ganadores de la Brumos Porsche 250 disputada en el Daytona International Raceway con el Ford Dallara N° 10 del equipo SunTrust y en el que estos vencieron a Gurney-Fogarty –terceros en el certamen con 196 puntos- por 0s270, el final más ajustado de la historia.

Los pilotos del Penske Racing, Timo Bernhard y Romain Dumas, harán su debut en el Barber Motorsports Park ocupando el cuarto lugar del campeonato a 17 puntos de los líderes y buscarán su primera victoria entre los Prototipos Daytona a bordo del Porsche Riley Nº12.

En la división GT, Lee Keen y Dirk Werner ganaron cuatro de las últimas cinco carreras y van en pos de su cuarta victoria consecutiva a bordo del Porsche GT3 del Farnbacher Loles Racing y aumentaron su ventaja en el campeonato a 29 puntos en las posiciones.

Sylvain Tremblay y Nick Ham, ganadores en 2008, también finalizaron segundos en la Brumos Porsche 250 en el Mazda RX-8, mientras que Kelly Collins y Paul Edwards, los actuales campeones en GT, todavía no han ganado en 2009 con Pontiac GXP.R.

La práctica para la Porsche 250 presented by Legacy Credit Union inicia a las 9:20 a.m. de este viernes. La clasificación está programada para la 1 p.m. del sábado y la bandera verde que dará lanzamiento a la carrera de dos horas y 45 minutos está programada las 3 p.m. (hora del Este) y será transmitida en vivo por SPEED Channel con relatos de Jorge Koechlin y comentarios de Roberto Guerrero.

LOS NEUMÁTICOS SE QUEDAN EN EL PAVIMENTO DEL BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK: MEMO ROJAS

Debido al tremendo calor que se registra en el estado de Alabama, que incluso llega a los 49 grados centígrados en el habitáculo de los autos, hoy el pavimento del Barber Motorsports Park “prácticamente se ha comido las llantas. Quedaron como si les hubieras pasado un rayador gigante de queso”, según apreció Memo Rojas.

“Esta difícil situación con las llantas, nos obligó a seguir una táctica diferente. Por ello mismo, hoy en las dos sesiones de prácticas libres, sólo usamos un juego de neumáticos, de los cinco a que tenemos derecho durante todo el fin de semana por reglamento de la serie”, explicó el piloto de la Escudería Telmex/Chip Ganassi Racing con Félix Sabates.

“Y eso a su vez –siguió en su explicación Rojas- nos llevó a retrasarnos en los tiempos. Pues casi terminamos sin llantas y en una situación muy complicada de manejo en esta pista de 2.3 millas de largo. Pero esa fue la orden del equipo”.

¿Qué se pretende?, le preguntamos al campeón vigente de los Prototipos Daytona de la Gran-Am Series, y nos dice:

“Bueno, la idea era usar sólo un juego el día de hoy, mañana sábado otro para enfrentar las calificaciones, y reservarnos tres para la carrera. Esto porque, dadas las condiciones de calor, podremos tener neumáticos frescos durante las dos horas y cuarto que dura la competencia y estar en mejores condiciones de pelear el triunfo”.

Y continúa Memo: “Usaremos el primer juego nuevo en la arrancada y durante el primer tercio de la carrera. El segundo al cambio de piloto. Y el tercer juego para el cierre final. Esto en teoría nos permitirá realizar una mejor carrera”.

“Es una estrategia de sacrificio –abunda Memo- y creo que será buena. Muchos equipos hoy gastaron dos de sus cinco juegos, y nosotros preferimos reservarnos. La verdad es que la pista está imposible porque Birmingham es un infierno este fin de semana”.

“Aún así, durante la primera sesión realizamos tiempos muy competitivos, porque estaba todavía fresco, y rodamos en el tercer puesto, con una vuelta de 1´20”993. Lo cual nos dice que el rendimiento del auto es bueno”, finalizó el piloto Telmex.

Grand-Am: Memo y Pruett en la primera fila en la Porsche 250

Memo Rojas, piloto de la Escudería Telmex/Chip Ganassi Racing con Félix Sabates, enfrentó hoy la sesión calificada de la octava fecha de los Grand-Am Series, llevando al Telmex 01 a la segunda plaza para largar mañana desde la primera fila en el Barber Motorsports Park en Birmingham, Alabama.

El mexicano y campeón vigente de los Prototipos Daytona, realizó un giro de un minuto, 21 segundos y 209 milésimas, en su mejor vuelta la pista de 3.7 kilómetros de longitud, para ubicarse en la segunda plaza de la sesión calificada, a poco más de una décima de segundo de diferencia del poleman, Jon Fogarty.

Fue un gran trabajo el realizado hoy en el Barber Motorsports Park, pues largar de la primera fila es bueno, como dijo Memo, “y se está en una posición de presionar y no ser el presionado. Sobre todo en esta pista y en las condiciones en que esperamos la carrera: con mucho calor. Lo mejor es que tuvimos un buen auto, incluso pudimos alcanzar la pole, pero fuimos obstaculizados por uno de los Porsches”

“Y como les comentaba ayer, la estrategia estará basada en los neumáticos. Si las altas temperaturas persisten para la competencia de mañana, como lo esperamos, contamos con tres juegos de llantas para correr las dos horas y cuarto siempre con neumáticos frescos”, explicó Memo.

“De modo que hay confianza en el equipo y personalmente creo que podremos alcanzar la tercera victoria de la temporada”, finalizó Memo Rojas

Grand-Am: García saldrá quinto en Alabama

El piloto madrileño Antonio García conseguía en la tarde-noche de este Sábado la quinta posición en parrilla para la carrera de mañana, la Porsche 250 que se disputa en el Barber Motorsports Park de Birmingham - Alabama-.

Al volante del Coyote-Porsche inscrito por Spirit of Daytona Racing, García era el responsable de realizar la calificación del coche que comparte con Buddy Rice, plasmando en los entrenamientos oficiales todo lo bueno exhibido en los libres donde la dupla hispano-americana ya habían estado entre los más rápidos desde el Viernes. Con el coche que habitualmente pilotan Scott Russell y Guy Cosmo, García se quedaba a tan sólo cuatro décimas de la pole position.

Un poleman que no era otro que Jon Fogarty con el Riley-Pontiac de Bob Stallings Racing, quien tras una dura pugna batía al mexicano Memo Rojas con el Riley-Lexus de Chip Ganassi. La tercera plaza la ocupaba Brian Frisselle, con el Dallara-Ford de SunTrust Racing, con lo que los tres primeros de la clasificación general saldrán desde las primeras plazas de parrilla. El también Dallara-Ford de Doran Racing era cuarto.

Entre los GT el más rápido era uno de los pilotos de Farnbacher Loles, Leh Keen, que obtenía la pole con su Porsche 911 GT3 Cup que comparte con Dirk Werner. Los Mazda RX-8 de Dempsey Racing y SpeedSource ocuparon las siguientes posiciones, con el mejor de los Pontiac GXP.R en quinto lugar a pesar de haber sido los mejores durante los libres.

La carrera, con una duración de 2 horas y 45 minutos como límite máximo, tendrá lugar este Domingo.

Una nota muy interesante de Scott Pruett:

After a week off, it’s back to preparing for our next race at the Barber Motorsports Park this weekend. Well, it actually wasn’t a week off. Immediately after our race at Daytona, I went with the Ganassi Cup team up to Road Atlanta to help them work on a number of things for their road course setups in preparation for the Watkins Glen race in a couple of weeks.

One thing is for sure, after spending July 4 in Daytona and then a few days in Georgia, I’m as ready as I’ll ever be for the heat and humidity we’ll see in Birmingham. With all the issues we face over a race weekend, it may sound strange, but the biggest issue at Barber is the heat and the weather. It’s an issue with the drivers, the car, the grip and the horsepower. It affects everything we do. It’s further complicated with the rain we’ve had there in the past.

Outside of the weather, Barber is a great track for both the fans and the drivers. It’s a very technical track – both uphill and downhill with about 80 feet of elevation change over the course of the track. There’s no real time to rest there with 17 turns. You are always working the car, so it’s very physical before you even take the heat into consideration.

Barber is probably one of the best tracks in America for the fans that attend the race. There are so many viewing areas that allow you to see a great deal of the race track. It’s almost like a stadium view where fans are elevated above the race track, but in a beautiful hillside setting. And if the sun gets to be a little much, the huge pine trees that surround the track provide a nice alternative in the shade. When you add the motorcycle museum into the mix, it’s a place I think any road racing fan would enjoy.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t been a place that our TELMEX Lexus has enjoyed very much over the past five years. For the Ganassi team, this has consistently been one of our most difficult tracks. Some tracks you know you’ll have a good car when you roll off the truck, but we’ve struggled some at Barber. We just haven’t done as well year after year at there. On the bright side, we did win here a year ago and, hopefully, we can build on that.

Now that we’re officially past the Fourth of July, it basically begins the home stretch for us with just five races remaining. It’s been a crazy first half of the season. We came out of the box with a strong showing at the ’24 Hours’, then we had some rough going at Virginia and New Jersey, then we had three straight races where we finished in the top two (a second at Laguna and wins at Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio), and then back down last race at Daytona. It’s a season like I haven’t experienced before.

Our view right now is we have to be consistent, if we can keep our TELMEX Lexus up front and stay on the podium, we’ll be in great shape in going after the championship. On the other hand, while all of the leaders have struggled at times, we’re getting to the point in the season where you just can’t afford a major problem.

Nic Jonsson nos habla acerca de cual es la clave para correr en el circuito Barber Motorsports Park

“Racing at Barber Motorsports Park”

Hey there, Nic Jonsson here. Now that we have reached the mid-point of this race season, we at Krohn Racing have changed our goals for the remainder of this season. We’ve had a lot of up and downs, with the highs being the win at New Jersey in the rain and our 2nd place finish at Mid-Ohio a couple of weeks ago. Without getting into too many details about our lows, so far this season I have to say it was the 24 hour race in Daytona. That was the biggest disappointment for us since we had a good, fast race car and had been preparing for months with the crew working very hard back home over the winter. But that’s the way racing goes sometimes. just look at the big boys in F1, Ferrari and McLaren from dominating the last 10 years to hardly taking any points this year. That is an indication of how hard it is and that you also have to have a little luck. I’m a firm believer that you make your own destiny but there is some stuff you just can’t control and fall victim to.

Well on to something more positive, it was great to have Eric and Tracy back in the # 75 Proto Auto LOLA in Daytona and having them bring home a good result for the team. This weekend we will be at Barber Motorsports Park for the next round of the Rolex and KONI Championship.

This is without a doubt one of the greatest and most well kept facilities in the country. All the surroundings are beautiful along with a fantastic motorcycle museum at the track. The track offers a lot of elevation changes, blind entries, slow and fast speed corners along with some really nice flowing turns. This is a track that every driver enjoys especially since it’s a very technical track with many different ways of taking a corner. Even though the track is rather narrow, it still offers good passing possibilities. This is a place where you want to run as much down force as possible on the car as long as you can balance the front and rear for both hard braking and mid-corner speed. The straights here are not the type of straights where you’re going to out drag anyone because you have more power. To pass someone on the straights you have to make sure you come off the previous corner really well and can get to power as early as possible. A very important thing here is to have a good, positive front end of the car so you can get the car turned and pointed to get back on the power.

Another important element is the braking. At Barber, you need to have a stable rear end since you are braking into several corners going downhill. This will make the rear even lighter under braking than on a flat braking zone. The weight transfer you have in the car braking downhill makes a big difference so if you can have the car calm and stable here, you will be able to turn and attack the corners harder and get back to the power earlier and easier. I’m very excited to be racing back at Barber and am hoping for a great weekend for the Krohn Racing Proto Auto LOLA.

On the Kinetic Motorsports side in the KONI Challenge, we are racing 3-GS and 1-ST car. Even though I’m not racing myself, I’m still going to be watching and paying very close attention to how my team does. This race is also going to be very hot and the key will be to stay hydrated and make sure we stay cool and not loose focus when it’s time to go racing.
