Acerca de la pista

Laguna Seca Raceway es un autódromo situado en Monterey, hoy situado en los Estados Unidos. El trazado principal tiene una longitud de 3.602 metros. Su récord de vuelta oficial lo ostenta Hélio Castroneves, de 1'07.722 a un promedio de 191,4 km/h, logrado en la clasificación del Gran Premio de Monterey de 2000 de la CART.

Desde su apertura en el año 1957, el circuito de Laguna Seca ha albergado carreras de numerosos campeonatos, entre ellos el "Gran Premio de Monterey" de la Champ Car World Series y el Gran Premio de Estados Unidos de Motociclismo del Campeonato Mundial de Motociclismo (entre 1988 y 1994, y luego desde 2005), así como fechas del Campeonato Mundial de Superbikes (desde 1995 hasta 2004), la American Le Mans Series (desde 1999) y la Rolex Sports Car Series (desde 2005).
El "sacacorchos"

La curva 8, llamada Corkscrew ("sacacorchos"), es una famosa chicana a ciegas con un drástico cambio de nivel. En la carrera de la CART de la temporada 1996, el italiano Alex Zanardi adelantó al estadounidense Bryan Herta por fuera del asfalto en la última vuelta, y en la de 1999 falleció el piloto uruguayo Gonzalo Rodríguez tras salirse de la pista y volcar por encima de las vallas de protección.En 2008 Valentino Rossi adelantó a Casey Stoner en el "sacacorchos" por fuera de la pista, ganó esa carrera y dando la vuelta de honor se bajó de la moto y besó el "sacacorchos".

Retiring de Ferran to be honoured



Gil de Ferran will serve as Grand Marshal for the American Le Mans Series season finale at Laguna Seca next weekend to mark his retirement from the cockpit.

The Brazilian announced in August that he will step down from driving duties in his De Ferran Motorsports team's Acura at the end of the year.

His role as Grand Marshal will include giving the 'start your engines' command to the field at the beginning of the race.

In addition, the De Ferran Acura will carry a special white livery at Laguna Seca in deference to his mentor Jim Hall's Chapparral sportscars of the 1960s. De Ferran began his American racing career - which saw him win two Champ Car titles and the Indianapolis 500 - with Hall's team in 1995.

"It's going to be an emotional occasion and a great honour to be Grand Marshal," said de Ferran.

"Along with Roger Penske and Jackie Stewart, Jim Hall has been one of the three greatest mentors during my career. Interestingly, I won my first IndyCar race with Jim at Laguna in 1995 and enjoyed two successful seasons racing for him when I first came to America.

"And it's in respect of what Jim did for me that since we established de Ferran Motorsports our Acuras have been running the same number 66 that he used on so many of his iconic Chaparrals. Now we are going one step further by recreating the famous Chaparral livery for my final race in California."

Hall, who will attend the event, said he appreciated de Ferran's generous gesture.

"It's very nice that Gil has chosen to honor me in some way at what's obviously a very special event for him," said Hall.

"We certainly had a good run with him for a couple of years and I really enjoyed watching his career develop thereafter. It gave me a lot of satisfaction seeing him do so well.

"He kindly gives me a lot of credit for the part I played in boosting his career along but Gil did it for himself - he's the guy with the talent and the skill plus the work ethic needed to succeed. I give him at least 99 per cent of the credit but I greatly appreciate the fact that he's thankful for the part I played in his career."

Laguna will mark the second time that de Ferran has retired from competition, as he had previously stopped racing at the end of the 2003 IndyCar season. After a period running the Honda Formula 1 team, he retired to the US to establish De Ferran Motorsports last year.

He will continue to head the team after his retirement from the cockpit, and is working on adding an IndyCar arm alongside the squad's sportscar programme.

De Ferran and team-mate Simon Pagenaud still have an outside chance of the ALMS LMP1 title going to Laguna, as they trail Highcroft's David Brabham and Scott Sharp by 21 points with 25 available in the finale.

ALMS: El Jaguar listo para debutar en Laguna Seca


El trazado de Laguna Seca, situado en Monterey, verá este próximo fin de semana el debut del nuevo vehículo de GT2. Hablamos, como no, del Jaguar XKR GT2 desarrollado por RSR, el equipo de Paul Gentilozzi, después de que fuese presentado oficialmente a la prensa en Road Atlanta, durante la semana de Petit Le Mans.

El coche, que en Road Atlanta finalmente no compitió ya que sólo realizó un pequeño shakedown durante los entrenamientos en Braselton, estará este fin de semana en la última carrera del American Le Mans Series en Laguna Seca, una prueba que tendrá una duración de cuatro horas.

Después de Petit Le Mans, RSR se desplazó hasta GingerMan Raceway, en South Haven, para desarrollar más el Jaguar y centrando sus esfuerzos en el set-up del vehículo. Los tests privados, que fueron muy satisfactorios, han permitido al equipo avanzar en la dirección correcta.

Gentilozzi será acompañado al volante del Jaguar por el belga Marc Goossens, un piloto con una dilatada experiencia en resistencia. Scott Pruett sin embargo no podrá ser de la partida, como esta previsto, dado que estará en Miami para la última carrera del Grand-Am.

After coming so close to a championship in its four years in the American Le Mans Series, Flying Lizard Motorsports is knocking on the door of a second consecutive GT2 crown entering this weekend's Monterey Sports Car Championships presented by Patrón. As it has all season, the Sonoma, Calif.-based team is entering a pair of Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs for their home race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Class championship leaders Jörg Bergmeister and Patrick Long have five victories to their credit this season (all consecutively from St. Petersburg to Mid-Ohio) and hold an 18-point lead in the driver title race with the Lizards holding the same margin in the team standings over Risi Competizione. Ninth-place points will be good enough for both crowns regardless of the finishing position of Jaime Melo and Pierre Kaffer in the Risi Ferrari F430 GT.

The Flying Lizard squad also can score valuable points should Long and Bergmeister falter; Johannes van Overbeek and Seth Neiman will drive the second Lizard Porsche.

"The championship has been a moving target for us this year," said team chief strategist Thomas Blam. "We had a very strong first half of the season and built a good points margin, but we've seen that lead erode over the last several races. The pressure is on: in a four-hour race at a track like Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, a lot can happen. We have to stay focused on putting together a strong car and finishing; we don't want to take any chances with traffic. We've been fast at Laguna in the past and had fast cars at Petit Le Mans in both the wet and the dry, so we expect that we'll be on the pace on Saturday."

99 AND COUNTING
A victory for the Lizards, fellow Porsche GT2 team Farnbacher Loles Racing or Team Cytosport with its Porsche RS Spyder in LMP2 will give the German marque 100 all-time Series victories, the first for any manufacturer.

The numbers tell an impressive story of Porsche's success over the years...
• Since the first American Le Mans Series race in 1999, Porsche has recorded 24 victories in LMP2, two in GTS and 73 in GT2. Ten different entrants have won Series races for Porsche.
• Thirty-six drivers have won races in a Porsche.
• Porsche has won 12 manufacturer championships: one in GTS, three in LMP2 and eight in GT2/GT.
• Nine drivers have class championships for Porsche.
• It has put together streaks of at least five consecutive victories on seven different occasions.
• Porsche also has 93 pole positions - 68 in GT2/GT, one in GTS and 24 in LMP2.

The final race in the 2009 American Le Mans Series is the four-hour Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. The green flag is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. PT on Saturday, October 10. The race will air on SPEED from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 11. ALMS: Clausura de la temporada en Laguna Seca

El campeonato American Le Mans Series llega a su fin este próximo fin de semana, en una temporada que ha estado marcada en muchos momentos para la escasez de parrilla provocada por la crisis económica pero que sin embargo en esta última cita se irá por encima de los treinta coches.

Las clasificaciones llegan con casi todo decidido a Laguna Seca, en especial en las categorías de prototipos. En LMP1 la victoria volverá a ser un asunto entre los Acura ARX-02a de Highcroft Racing y de Ferran Motorsports. Si bien los primeros, con David Brabham y Scott Sharp, ya son campeones el punto de interés estará en los segundos, donde Gil de Ferran se retira y será honrado como un campeón como él se merece. Completando la parrilla de LMP1 estarán, además, el Lola B09/60 Judd de Drayson Racing, los dos Lola B06/10 AER de Autocon Motorsports y el Ginetta-Zytek 09HS de Corsa Motorsports. Después de su ausencia de última hora por diversos problemas de ECO Racing, vuelven en Laguna Seca con un Radical SR9 AER pilotado por Cort Wagner, Hideki Noda y Nikolas Konstant.

En LMP2, siendo Adrian Fernandez y Luis Diaz también campeones con un Acura ARX-01a, volverá a haber cuatro coches. El mencionado Acura mexicano, más los dos dos Lola B09/86 Mazda de Dyson Racing, con la novedad de Ben Devlin pilotando junto a Guy Smith y Chris Dyson. El cuarto coche será el Porsche RS Spyder de Team Cytosport con Klaus Graf como principal baluarte.

En GT2, aunque todavía no está decidido, el título está muy bien encaminado para Jörg Bergmeister y Pat Long, que con un Porsche 911 GT3 RSR de FLM les vale un noveno puesto para revalidar el título de 2008. Frente a ellos, además de los Porsche de Farnbacher Loles, Team Falken y VICI Racing, que vuelve con Lance David Arnold, Johannes Stuck y Richard Wetbrook, habrá que contar con los BMW y Chevrolet oficiales, que ya han ganado antes, y el Ferrari 430 GT de Risi Competizione. Atención también al debut oficial del nuevo Jaguar de RSR con Paul Gentilozzi y Marc Goossens.

En ALMS Challenge hasta ocho coches que ascenderán el número de inscritos hasta los 33 vehículos. Los ya campeones son Martin y Melanie Snow con un Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

En la Lmp1 el Acura de De Ferran Motorsport fue primero seguido por el Acura de Patrón Highcroft Racing’s.
En Lmp2 los mexicanos de Fernandez racing fueron los más rápidos seguidos de los 2 Lola /Mazda
En GT2 fue el Porsche de Flying Lizard Motorsports el más rápido seguido del Corvette de Gavin / Beretta y tercero el Porsche de Farnbacher Loles Racing.

En Gt2 los 8 primeros autos de la clases están en el mismo segundo de 1:24.xx sumamente cerrados.

El Jaguar solo dio 5 giros y tiene un tiempo de 1:34.388, nose que habría pasado con ese auto

Por cierto esta carrera De Ferran Motorsports estara con otros colores en honor del fundador de Chaparral , Jim Hall debido a que esta es la ultima carrera profesionalmente de Gil de Ferran que ahora solo pasará a ser el Manager del Equipo y Jim Hall fue el que le dio la oportunidad a Gil de debutar en Norteamerica en los open whells en mediados de los 90's.

Sorpresas después de la primer práctica oficial.

- El auto más rápido fue el Lola B09 86 Mazda de Dyson / Smith pero este es el que esta utilizando biocombustible así que no puede obtener puntos pero en realidad es un LMP2 .
- El segundo auto más rápido fue el Acura ARX-01B de Fernandez Racing por encima de los LMP1, el mejor LMP1 se encuentra en tercera posición general y sorpresa es el Ginetta-Zytek 09HS de Mowlem/Johansson.

En GT2 sigue sumamente cerrados los tiempos siendo los más rápidos el Corvette de Gavin / Beretta, seguido por el BMW de Hand/Auberlen y en tercer lugar la Ferrari de Melo / Kaffer

El ’Chapu’ y Adrián listos para última carrera de American LeMans



Este fin de semana la serie American Le Mans cerrará sus libros de la temporada 2009 con el evento “Monterey Sports Car Championships Presentado por Patrón” en el autódromo de Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Adrián Fernández y Luis Díaz se dirigen a uno de sus circuitos favoritos para terminar una temporada impresionante, y habiendo logrado los honores del campeonato de fabricante para Acura y el de equipo para Lowe’s Fernández Racing de manera impecable.

Aún en la mesa se encuentra el reto GREEN X, en el cual Lowe’s Fernández Racing está como líder con 9 puntos de ventaja con Patrón Highcroft Racing. El premio se presenta a un auto prototipo y a un GT en cada carrera, a quien haya demostrado la mejor actuación y eficiencia en el uso de combustible con el menor daño al medio ambiente. Al final de la carrera de este fin de semana, EPA (Agencia americana de protección al medio ambiente) y la DOE (Departamento americano de energía), junto con la SAE Internacional, presentarán los premios del reto Green a los fabricantes de cada clase que hayan mostrado la menor puntuación durante toda la temporada.

Fernández y Díaz, llegan a este fin de semana con cuentas pendientes, después de una patética carrera el año pasado del auto #15 Lowe’s Acura. Tras haber calificado en la primera fila de largada, perdieron el segundo lugar de su clase y tercero general, a una hora de terminar la competencia debido a un problema de batería, durante su última parada en los fosos. Si el dúo regresa en forma este fin de semana y logran la octava victoria de su clase, empatarían el record de ALMS en la clase LMP2 de más carreras ganadas por Penske Racing.

Fernández en Laguna Seca: “He venido aquí tantas veces que me es difícil buscar nuevas palabras para describir lo mucho que me gusta este evento, la pista, los aficionados y el área. Es una carrera a la que siempre me entusiasma venir y este año, vendré con mi familia de nuevo para compartir con ellos. Así como me gusta esta pista, también me es una espina. He tenido buenas carreras aquí, pero nunca he logrado ganar y definitivamente está en mi lista, como lo estaba también Elkhart Lake, donde logramos una muy gratificante victoria este año, lo cual significó mucho para mí. Hemos estado muy fuertes los últimos dos años y estamos muy optimistas para este sábado. Muchas cosas pueden suceder en una carrera de 4 horas, pero espero que la juguemos inteligentemente. Tenemos algunos invitados de Lowe’s, y significaría mucho para nosotros darles esta victoria el fin de semana.”

Díaz en los retos de éste fin de semana: “El venir a esta pista con experiencia, definitivamente ayuda. Es una pista única por todas las elevaciones y realmente es un placer manejarla, pero la puesta a punto puede ser algo mañosa. Basándonos en los dos años pasados, sabemos que tenemos un gran ajuste para esta pista y me siento muy confiado para este fin de semana. El año pasado tuvimos mala suerte por el problema de batería. De otro modo, hubiéramos estado en el podio por segundo año consecutivo. Tanto Adrián como yo, tenemos muchas millas en Laguna Seca, y esta pista tiene muchos recuerdos para mí. Mi primera carrera en Estados Unidos fue en esta pista y aquí también gané con Scott Pruett en la serie Grand-Am. Sería muy agradable agregarle la victoria de ALMS a esos recuerdos este fin de semana.”

ALMS: De Ferran puede con Brabham- Calificación

Gil de Ferran quiere retirarse a lo grande de su actividad como piloto y está decidido a dar lo mejor de sí mismo para despedirse con una victoria. El brasileño, al volante del Acura ARX-02a LMP1 de su equipo, ha conseguido batir en la sesión de calificación a David Brabham, con idéntica montura pero de Highcroft Racing.

La sesión, como ya ocurriese ayer, ha empezado dominada por los LMP2, aunque a falta de diez minutos de Ferran se ha puesto primero y ya no ha abandonado esta posición. Brabham lo ha intentado en los últimos minutos pero no ha podido batir a de Ferran por menos de una décima.

La tercera posición, y primer LMP2, ha sido el Acura de Fernandez Racing y pilotado por Luis Diaz. Diaz ha tenido una renta de unas siete décimas con el Lola-Mazda de Dyson Racing pilotado por Butch Leitzinger. La tercera línea de parrilla ha sido para los LMP1 de Drayson Racing, con el Lola de Jonny Cocker, y Corsa Motorsports, con el Ginetta-Zytek HS de Johnny Mowlem.

En GT2 Chevrolet volvía a sorprender con uno de los coches preparados por Pratt-Miller. Y es que la pole position se la llevaba el danés Jan Magnussen con uno de los Chevrolet Corvette C6R que tan magníficos resultados están ofreciendo al equipo americano. La segunda posición era para el Ferrari 430 GT de Risi Competizione, que pilotaba en esta ocasión Pierre Kaffer y que se quedaba a menos de dos décimas. Oliver Gavin, tercero con el segundo de los Chevrolet oficiales, ha confirmado el gran momento de estos vehículos.

Wolf Henzler ha sido el mejor Porsche, con el 911 GT3 RSR de FLR, en cuarta posición seguido por Jörg Bergmeister que roza el título con la punta de sus dedos. Bill Auberlen ha sido sexto, con el BMW E92 M3 de Rahal Letterman Racing, y Dominik Farnbacher séptimo con el Panoz Esperante Ford de Team PTG.

En cuanto a la ALMS Challenge, el mejor tiempo correspondía a Guy Cosmo, con un Porsche de Orbit Racing, seguido por James Sofronas y Galen Bieker, también con los mismos coches alemanes.

Declaraciones de los pilotos de Fernandez Racing luego de la clasificación

Luis Díaz: “Tenemos un gran equipo, excelentes ingenieros y mecánicos. El auto estaba increíble el día de hoy. Es una buena pista para mí. Este es un fin de semana muy especial para todos nosotros en el equipo, y estamos haciendo todo lo que podemos para lograr el mejor resultado posible. Pienso que este es un buen ejemplo de lo que este equipo es. En este equipo siempre damos todo lo que tenemos. No importa si es la primera o la última carrera, siempre damos nuestro mejor esfuerzo”.

Adrián Fernández: “Fue un muy buen día. El auto ha estado fantástico desde que lo bajamos del tráiler. Estuvimos rapídos aquí el año pasado y esta justo donde lo dejamos. Tanto Luis como yo hemos manejado bien y John [Ward, Ingeniero] y los muchachos han hecho un muy buen trabajo poniendo a punto el auto. Estuvimos muy cerca de lograr la primera posición general de largada. Ahora tenemos que enfocarnos en la carrera y terminar nuestro trabajo con un buen resultado para terminar la temporada. Creo que tenemos oportunidad de lograr la victoria general. Obviamente tenemos que asegurarnos de no perder una vuelta con los autos P1, pero creo que estaremos bien. En la noche, si tenemos una re-arrancada o algo así, estaremos en buena posición. Con los tiempos tan cercanos entre los P1 y los P2, va a ser una carrera muy emocionante”.
