There was a special treat for Jenson Button and Jamie Whincup, respective Formula 1 and V8 Supercar Champions, as each man swapped cockpits with the other at Albert Park on Wednesday. Both series will host rounds of their championships on the Melbourne street circuit this weekend.
With Button driving the McLaren-Mercedes MP4-25 in 2010 and Whincup the very different Holden Commodore, both drivers enjoyed the unusual experience.
"That was great!" Button exclaimed following his run. "It was difficult to get used to - I was surprised by how much grip it had. I was carrying a lot of speed but turned into a right-hander, got a lot of understeer and ran off the tarmac, onto the painted run-off, but it was all good! In a Formula 1 car I'd have been closing my eyes at that point!"
Although Whincup was not strictly in Button's car - piloting the 2008 MP4-23 instead - Jamie was still highly excited by the drive.
"Jumping into a Formula 1 car is almost like going into space or flying a fighter jet," he said after controlling the exact chassis which took Lewis Hamilton to victory at Silverstone in 2008. "It's right up there with the best thing I could ever do.
"The car just does everything you'd want it to. The strain on my neck was amazing - the g-forces you feel are so much greater than I'd feel aboard my own race car. The F1 car is just a rocket ship, it's another league."
