HIGHCROFT RACING – THANKS AND FAREWELL TO HONDA
© Highcroft Racing
After a highly successful five seasons as partners, Highcroft Racing and Honda have concluded their relationship – the combination’s giant-killing performance at the 12 Hours of Sebring earlier this year was the final curtain for the partnership.
Highcroft was selected as one of the initial factory Acura teams for the brand’s debut in the American Le Mans Series in 2007.
Throughout the partnership, Highcroft established itself as not only the highest ALMS point-scoring team out of four factory outfits, but also collected back-to-back ALMS championships in 2009 and 2010.
The team also won the 2010 Michelin Green X Challenge Championship for optimizing overall on-track performance, while using the least amount of fuel.
Highcroft scored 11 race wins for Honda, nine pole positions and 28 podium finishes from only 42 races, including its gallant second place finish at Sebring, where it defeated both factory Audi and Peugeot entries.
It was the only ALMS team of any class to score a podium finish in every round of the championship in 2010. It’s championship victory last season came in the most competitive year in ALMS history where five different teams and manufacturers took overall victory.
The team had intended to run the HPD ARX-01e at next month’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Unfortunately, given the situation in Japan and its impact on Honda, Highcroft has been obliged to withdraw its entry at Le Mans, due to lack of adequate financial support.
“We have had an amazing relationship with all the associatesat Honda, Acura, Honda Performance Development and Wirth Research over the past five years and it is with deep regret that our amazing run has come to an end,” Highcroft Racing owner, Duncan Dayton said.
“We are extremely proud of what we have achieved with our partners. When we were first selected as a factory team, nobody expected we would be able to run with some of the biggest names in racing, that came across from IndyCar racing.
“Not only did we prove that we were competitive, but we became the team the beat. We are equally proud of the great working relationships we built with HPD and Wirth Research developing the cars and turning them into winning machines.”
“We certainly appreciate the massive impact the earthquake and tsunami has had on the people of Japan and the huge challenges facing Japanese business.
“It appears this may have contributed to Honda’s decision and we fully respect and understand their position.
“Everyone was really looking forward to taking the ARX-01e to Le Mans – we really believed the car could have been extremely competitive.
“Le Mans is one of the greatest races in the world, but it requires significant financial and physical resources to compete at the highest levels. Whatever we do, we want to be able to do it properly and it just isn’t viable at this time without proper backing.
“I am deeply disappointed for our team at Highcroft Racing who were really looking forward to the race and for David (Brabham) and Marino (Franchitti) who are left without a ride at Le Mans at a very late stage.
“Our drivers have been truly incredible in recent years and I know they are as disappointed as we are that the ARX-01e will not be at Le Mans.”
Highcroft completed a number of firsts for Honda in the development of the sportscar program including the first overall race victory, first LMP1 victory, first championship and an amazing effort in 2010 where it took a LMP2 chassis to overall series victory in the combined LMP1/LMP2 class – taking the team’s title, the drivers championship for David Brabham and Simon Pagenaud as well as the manufacturer’s championship for HPD with a single car entry.
Highcroft Racing is actively seeking new manufacturer relationships and is beginning discussions regarding future programs – both in sports cars and other championships.
“For our future, we need to take the next step in the development of our team,” Dayton said.
“The team is now in a position to start with a clean slate and work towards our next championship assault with new partners.
“Our organization was established as a platform for manufacturers to showcase their technology on the world stage through motorsport.
“We still have very big goals and ambitions – including additional victories in the ALMS as well as Le Mans and IndyCar.”

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Mazda's triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the manufacturer will present the prototype 787B in the prelude to the 2011 race.

Mazda will demonstrate the 787B June 11 at 12:30, lifting the curtain on the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car will also take part in the drivers' parade on Friday, 10th June in Le Mans city centre.
Since 1991, the Mazda 787B Mazda has been exhibited at the museum in Hiroshima, Japan. In preparation for its demonstration at Le Mans, Mazda has carefully restored the car to run for the first time since his post-race inspection in 1991. This work was entrusted to employees of Mazda that had participated in the Le Mans 24h at the time. The restored 787B was tested by one of the most experienced drivers of the marque, and its performance has been confirmed by former Mazda factory drivers, Yoshimi Katayama, Yojiro Terada and Takashi Yorino.
As part of the celebration of this 20th anniversary, various 1991 Mazda team members will also return to Le Mans. The winning driver Johnny Herbert (Britain) will be joined by David Kennedy (Ireland), Pierre Dieudonne (Belgium) and other team members.

Hope Racing join the list of teams invited to the 24 hours 2011
Last weekend, the LM P1 Oreca (#5) hybrid prototype of the Swiss team met the approval of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest.
It will be driven by Steve Zacchia in Sarthe (third appearance at the 24 Hours), Casper Elgaard (eighth appearance, winner in the LM P2 Porsche RS Spyder in 2009) and Jan Lammers (22nd participation and winner in 1988 with Jaguar). This will be the first hybrid prototype for the start of 24 Hours. It is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder Swiss Hytech engine, combined with a kinetic energy recovery system developed in England.
Unless there are any unexpected last-minute withdrawals, the entry list of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2011 is now closed. Two cars are still in reserve: the second Ford GT of Robertson Racing and Young Driver Aston Martin Vantage of the AMR. Scrutineering will take place on the 5th June and 6th June, and the race 11th and 12th June 2011

Hiscox and Jota Sport AMR race for success at Le Mans
When the Aston Martin GT2 of Jota Sport AMR appears on the grid of this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours on 11th June, in front of an estimated 235,000 spectators and a massive global TV audience, it will be resplendent in the livery of one of the world’s leading specialist insurers, Hiscox.
Hiscox, a specialist in high value home and motor insurance, has entered into a 42-month agreement with Kent based Jota Sport, Official Aston Martin Racing Partner Team, which sees the insurer become the team’s official insurance partner.
As well as taking advantage of the extensive branding opportunities that the Le Mans Series offers, the partnership deal aims to help Hiscox identify and develop new business opportunities through the relationship with Jota Group and other companies (including SJD Accountancy and Jota Aviation) belonging to the Jota Chairman, Simon Dolan, recipient of the coveted British Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 Entrepreneur of the Year.
Commenting on the sponsorship deal, Annabel Venner, Marketing Director at Hiscox, said: "We are excited to be joining up in this innovative partnership with Jota Sport AMR and are looking forward to seeing Jota Sport's stunning Aston Martin GT2 at this year’s Le Mans 24 hours, complete with its distinctive, Hiscox styled black and red livery.
“As a specialist in high value home and motor insurance, the Le Mans Series provides the type of quality branding opportunities that appeal to our customers. It’s also an opportunity to communicate to those with high value cars that Hiscox offers extraordinary motor insurance that they just won’t find with a standard policy.”
Jota Sport’s Commercial Director Brian Sims also sees huge potential for this new partnership: “We are delighted to welcome aboard such a prestigious company as Hiscox. The underlying business strategy for the new partnership is indicative of the current demand by a sponsor for a measurable, sustainable return on their investment.”
“We’re looking forward to working closely with Hiscox to deliver a high level of performance both on and off the track.”
The team’s participation at Le Mans 24 will be followed by other Le Mans Series races at Imola, Estoril and Silverstone.
