Champion cars and drivers for ROC
Media information: 21 November 2007

2007 Ford Focus World Rally Championship car driven by Grönholm, both of which will take part in The Race of Champions next month

With The Race of Champions (ROC) full of star names, the cars needed to be worthy of the incredible line-up so organisers are today delighted to confirm two of the biggest names in motorsport.

Both Ford, the 2007 World Rally Manufacturer champions, and Aston Martin will be at the December 16 event, which will see Wembley Stadium transformed into a tarmac race track.

The ROC drivers, including Ford’s own Marcus Grönholm, will be competing in the actual Ford Focus WRC car shortly after the championship’s final round, in which Grönholm hopes to emerge victorious.

Director of Ford Team RS, Jost Capito said it was fitting that The ROC cars, as well as the drivers, should be proven winners. “We’re already manufacturer champions this year and it only remains to put all our weight behind Marcus for the drivers title,” he said.

“It can sometimes be difficult to do justice to the skill and bravery required in rally, because the course is so long. The Race of Champions gives us a chance to show-case Marcus and the car in front of all our fans. I’m sure it will be an incredible day.”

As well as the Ford Focus WRC car The ROC contestants, including David Coulthard, Jenson Button and Tom Kristensen, will again be put to the test in the Aston Martin Vantage N24.

The spectacular car, which is a variant of the V8 Vantage developed by Aston Martin for the Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance race, caused a storm at The Race of Champions 2006, producing some of the most thrilling action.

“We are delighted to once again have such prestigious and exciting cars in The ROC line-up,” said Fredrik Johnsson, President of event organizer’s IMP. “On top of the race-prepared Aston Martins and the World Rally Championship-winning Ford, we expect to announce more spectacular cars in the coming weeks.

“Of course, there will also be the ROC Cars that are so popular with the drivers and spectators. With its six speed sequential gearbox, great horsepower to weight ratio (175 bhp for less than 400 kgs) and superb handling the completely neutral ROC Cars are perfect for the decisive heats which can get pretty intense!”

The ROC promises to provide a spectacular winter fix for the 80,000 expected racing fans, with drivers from Formula 1, World Touring Cars, NASCAR and Sports Car competing in a champion of champions decider.

Notes to editors:

The ROC was created in 1988 by Fredrik Johnsson and the world’s best woman rally driver Michèle Mouton.

The premise is simple: using identical equipment and track, drivers can prove themselves based on talent alone. The drivers compete in a series of knockout heats in their own division to determine their class champion. Then, in a shoot-out to determine who is the master of motorsport, the winners go head-to-head in a super final. The victor is awarded the title “The Champion of Champions”.

Drivers confirmed for 2007 include:

Seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher
Formula One star Jenson Button
Reigning World Touring Car Champion, Andy Priaulx
Red Bull Racing’s David Coulthard
Triple Champ Car Champion Sébastien Bourdais
Seven-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen
Former DTM Champion Mattias Ekström
Reigning NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson
Eight-time X-Games Champion Travis Pastrana
Double World Rally Champion, Marcus Grönholm
Renault F1’s Heikki Kovalainen
Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel
1995 British Rally Champion Alister McRae
World Touring Car Championship star Yvan Muller
2003 World Rally Champion, Petter Solberg
Five-time Norwegian Rally Champion, Henning Solberg
This traditional end-of-season showdown attracts spectators from across Europe. For three years the event, held at the Stade de France in Paris, has attracted well over 50,000 spectators each year.

Action from the Race of Champions 2006 was broadcast in over 200 countries and watched by more than 186 million viewers.

Germany were forced to do things the hard way, coming from behind as seven-time Formula One world champion Schumacher stalled his Abarth rally car on the line at the start of the first heat.
He then used the kind of blocking tactics that made him infamous during his career before Heikki Kovalainen dived down his inside spectacularly to beat him by over a lap.
"I stalled. Pure and simple. It was my fault. It didn't matter in the end though," said Schumacher.
Germany got onto level terms when Formula One rookie Vettel sensationally beat double world rally champion Marcus Gronholm, despite the pair driving Ford Focuses identical to the one that the Finn took five wins in his final WRC season this year.
The stage was set for a spectacular final, and it duly came as Vettel and Kovalainen battled it out in Dakar-style buggies, with Toro Rosso man Vettel eventually edging it by two tenths of a second from Lewis Hamilton's new McLaren team-mate.
20-year-old Vettel went undefeated throughout the competition in what was an exceptional display of driving across a host of different machines.
"It was very good," he said afterwards. "Driving so many different cars is a big challenge but it was a lot of fun too.
"I spoke to David Coulthard before and he says that it is a rule that you don't come to drive in the RoC unless you're drunk. It's good that I did not take his advice."
Semi-Finals
Finland cruised into the final with a 100 per cent record as Kovalainen surprisingly defeated Norway's rally star Henning Solberg in the Abarths, and Gronholm did likewise to Petter Solberg.
A hostile reception was expected for Schumacher as England and Germany faced each other once more at Wembley, but the motor racing crowd were far more sympatheticthan the football fraternity.
As happens so often on the hallowed turf, English hearts were broken as Schumacher, who had trailed Jenson Button at half distance in the Solution F saloons, put in a sensational final two laps to beat him by a scant 0.364 seconds.
"That's nice Germany winning at Wembley," added Schumacher. "No balls or goals though. Shame."
Vettel completed the victory in the Ford Focus WRCs, defeating triple-world touring car champion Andy Priaulx, who had made a big dent in the back of his title-winning BMW on a demonstration run some 15 minutes earlier.
Quarter-Finals
It was Schumacher to the rescue for Germany as he beat NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson in the first heat of their tie against the USA, pushing his understeering Abarth so hard that he knocked his nation's flag off his car.
X-games legend Travis Pastrana came back against Vettel in the second heat, denting the rear corner of his Aston Martin in the process, but he could do nothing about Schumacher in the decider.
Norway and France set up a nailbiting decider with Petter Solberg able to cruise to victory after ChampCar legend Sebastien Bourdais ended his first &lsquorace' as a Toro Rosso F1 driver in the barriers on the way into the tunnel.
England had a far more straightforward victory over Scotland in their quarter, Button winning out in the battle of the Formula One drivers with David Coulthard aboard the Abarths and Priaulx making mincemeat out of Alister McRae in the Aston Martins.
Defending champions Finland were equally convincing as Kovalainen and Gronholm easily dispatched the Scandinavian superteam of Mattias Ekstrom his fellow DTM driver Tom Kristensen.
