Castroneves benefits from Power to sit on Iowa pole

The 2009 IndyCar Series for Team Penske started with Will Power in the cockpit of the No. 3 Dallara Honda and today, the Indianapolis 500 winner who took back his seat at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, benefited by the driving skills of the Aussie.

Helio Castroneves will start the Iowa Corn Indy 500 on Sunday from the pole position. Qualifying was scratched due to the weepers discovered on the 0.875-mile Iowa Speedway during the Indy Lights qualifying. The pesky "weepers" are the areas on a track where water seeps through the seams after a rain storm even with jets to dry the track surface.

Indy Racing League officials set the starting lineup based on Owner Points, meaning that the actual points leader will not inherit the pole. Power and Castroneves had amassed a total of 214 points in the Team Penske No. 3 car. Ryan Briscoe has 199. Ironically, Briscoe drives the No. 6 Penske team car.

"Those points definitely kept me in the front of the pits and now gave me the pole position at Iowa," said Castroneves. "Unfortunately for the fans, they didn't get to see the excitement of qualifying. Fortunately, I ended up getting a great situation here with a good starting position. Now that we have a Team Penske front row, we'll go for the win."

Jueuta Danica, está como Sutil ahora en FP2 que entrando a pits le pasó por encima al de Fisi. Llama la atención que tuviera que soltar el volante para poder darle full lock.

Dario Franchitti Gana las 250 de Iowa!!!

IndyCar: Gana Franchitti en Iowa Speedway



Dario Franchitti se llevó la victoria en la última cita de la IndyCar Series, disputada en esta ocasión en el óvalo de Iowa.

Con sólo veinte monoplazas presentes, la clasificación se anuló debido a la lluvia caída en la jornada del sábado, por lo que la parrilla de salida se formó teniendo en cuenta la clasificación general, siendo Helio Castroneves el poleman.

La carrera se compuso de dos mitades claramente diferenciadas. En la primera parte de la carrera, fueron cayendo muchos coches, provocando hasta cinco periodos de Caution en apenas cien vueltas. En la salida debieron abandonar Viso, Doornbos y Hunter-Reay, este último que se estrenaba con A.J. Foyt Enterprises; después, Castroneves y Dixon se tocaron luchando por el liderato, lo que provocó la rotura del alerón del Penske, y un pinchazo en el coche de Chip Ganassi, que los retrasaron; más tarde, Justin Wilson daría con el muro; tras algunos problemas de Graham Rahal, que le hicieron perder dos vueltas, Moraes y Matos sufrieron otro accidente; finalmente, Tony Kanaan caería tras impactar violentamente contra el muro.

De este modo, y a falta de 150 vueltas, sólo quedaban catorce coches en pista, trece en la vuelta del líder; sin embargo, no hubo ni una sola bandera amarilla más, y todas las paradas en boxes se realizaron bajo bandera verde, lo que permitió que Dario Franchitti, vencedor, y Ryan Briscoe, segundo, impusieran un ritmo demoledor, hasta el punto de que sólo dos otros coches se libraron de ser doblados: Hideki Mutoh, tercero, y Dan Wheldon, cuarto. Dixon fue quinto, y Catsroneves séptimo, a pesar de su toque inicial.

La semana que viene la IndyCar Series se trasladará al óvalo de Richmond.
