O'Connell leaves Corvette
By Matt Beer
Long-time factory Corvette driver Johnny O'Connell is leaving his role with the squad's American Le Mans Series and Le Mans 24 Hours programme, but will remain with the General Motors family to drive a Cadillac in the SCCA World Challenge GT series.
During his long association with Corvette, the 48-year-old notched up three ALMS class titles, took four class wins at Le Mans, and stretched his Sebring 12 Hours record to an eighth class victory.
"After 10 amazing years with Corvette Racing as part of one of the best American sportscar teams in history, I am extremely flattered that Cadillac selected me for this very important programme," said O'Connell.
"I'm very proud to have won more ALMS races in Corvettes than any other driver and to set records at Sebring and Le Mans.
"I've enjoyed fantastic relationships with the team, with great friends and co-drivers like Ron Fellows and Jan Magnussen, and with Corvette enthusiasts around the world.
"I look forward to building a similar fan base with Team Cadillac and representing Cadillac for many years to come."
GM Racing director Mark Kent added: "Johnny O'Connell has made a tremendous contribution to the success of Corvette Racing both on and off the track."
Corvette will announce its revised 2011 line-up next month.
