Digamos que un poco mal visto de los Piyóts a estas alturas, y más después de que el ACO determinó que el R15 cumple en todas. Pero al fin y al cabo lo que están ejerciendo es su derecho al berreo. Me disculpo pero no la encuentro en español

Peugeot protest Audi R15 legality at Le Mans

''We intend to take this matter to its conclusion''

At 10.35am today and in compliance with Article 29.2 of the specific regulations of the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours, Team Peugeot lodged a protest with the Race Director and the President of the Sporting Stewards of the Le Mans 24 Hours concerning the entrant Audi and the non-compliance of the three Audi prototypes with the ACO's 2009 technical regulations.

It would indeed seem that two features of the Audi R15 – in the configuration in which it was shown at technical scrutineering for the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours on June 8 – do not comply with Article 3.6.2 of the current technical regulations:

# The flap which links the two front wings.
# The appendages fixed to the inner surface of the front wings.

Imagen

These appendages and this flap effectively form part of the bodywork and their sole purpose is to generate downforce. These bodywork parts are considered to be aerodynamic elements. Since they do not appear on the list of aerodynamic elements authorised by Article 3.6.2, they are consequently not permitted.

Certain aspects of the car's non-compliance were pointed out to the ACO last March at the 12 Hours of Sebring, a round of the ALMS.

"Our protest dossier was already ready at the time, but the Automobile Club de l'Ouest made assurances that it would take the necessary steps ahead of the Le Mans 24 Hours," explained Olivier Quesnel. "I insist on the fact that our approach is constructive and not aggressive. It seeks to clarify what is an unclear situation with a view to obtaining clear, precise regulations in order to prepare for the future. All competitors need stable, firm regulations that apply to everyone, with a strong regulatory body capable of taking decisions."

"We intend to take this matter to its conclusion, not with the intention of weakening endurance racing but of making it stronger," he continued. "Should our protest not be upheld by the sporting stewards, we will lodge an appeal with motor sport's supreme governing body, the FIA. Now that this procedure is underway, all our energy is now focused entirely on our priority objective for 2009, which is to try to win the Le Mans 24 Hours. May the racing begin."

Previa de los cuatro aros...

Audi all set for the R15's 24-hour debut

Le Mans - Audi - Preview

Imagen

Logical lightweight construction, downsizing, efficiency and the best possible aerodynamics – the same subjects which currently occupy the brains of the automobile industry development departments are also key elements in the 24 Hours of Le Mans held for the 77th time on the weekend of June 13/14.

In the world's most famous endurance race, it is, in addition to speed, also more a question of reliability and efficiency – and to set trends afterwards. Audi has used Le Mans since 1999 to test technical innovations under racing conditions and has, in the process, repeatedly set milestones thanks to its technology leadership.

In this way, the Audi R8 successfully introduced gasoline direct-injection TFSI, with the Audi R10 TDI in 2006 a diesel-powered car won for the first time in the history of the race.

The Audi R8 and Audi R10 TDI have one thing in common: both were victorious on their Le Mans debuts. Audi Sport Team Joest now aims to continue this phenomenal trend with the new Audi R15 TDI in Audi's 100th anniversary year.

A ninth victory – with only eleven participations – would see Audi draw level with Ferrari in the French endurance classic's all-time winners list. Only Porsche has achieved more victories in its long Le Mans history.

The R15 TDI is packed with technical innovations. Among them a more compact, more efficient V10 TDI engine, logical lightweight construction, a totally new aerodynamic concept never before seen on a Le Mans sportscar and a novel vehicle power supply system using for the first time a lithium ion battery as used in hybrid vehicles of the next generation. It is lighter than a conventional battery and instead of supplying the more common twelve volts usually found in production cars, it supplies 15.2 volts. As a result of the higher power, electric consumers such as the starter motor can be designed to be smaller and lighter and thus increase the efficiency.

Logical lightweight design and construction
In general the Audi R15 TDI was trimmed logically for lightweight construction. The minimum weight of 900 kilograms originally stipulated by the regulations was significantly undercut through complex and intricate measures in order to facilitate the best possible weight distribution. That the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) ordered the minimum weight to be increased by 30 kilograms for diesel cars at short notice before the race hit the Audi Sport technicians hard. As a result, the R15 TDI was denied one decisive advantage.

To fit the additional 30 kilograms in the aerodynamically refined car several R15 TDI components had to be modified and their durability checked in extra endurance tests. The green light for the final version was thus only given following a successful 30-hour test at Le Castellet at the end of May – less than three weeks before the race.

A few days later, on May 29, the roll-out was made at a test track close to Ingolstadt for the three newly built-up race cars with the chassis numbers 104 (start number “1”), 105 (start number “2”) and 101 (start number “3”).

The new Audi R15 TDI demonstrated its potential in March on its victorious race debut at Sebring in the United States; many details have been optimized on the diesel racing sportscar for Le Mans since then. Improved cockpit cooling also numbers among the modifications.

Aerodynamic Cd optimized
Furthermore, an aerodynamic version designed for efficiency is used for the first time at Le Mans. While the R15 TDI still races with maximum downforce, a more favourable Cd value for the long straights at Le Mans is of prime importance. The R15 TDI nevertheless generates more downforce than its predecessor model the R10 TDI thanks to its innovative aerodynamic concept incorporating the uncompromising implementation of air-flow through the car.

Key factor: tyre wear
A very decisive factor during the 77th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will be the lowest possible tyre wear. Since only two, instead of the previously allowed four mechanics, can change tyres during pit stops the standing time in the pit almost doubles. Therefore it will depend more than ever on being able to drive for as long as possible on the same set of tyres without losing too much performance.

The six-hour free practice session on Wednesday evening and Thursday evening's four-hour qualifying session are therefore of particular importance. Because there was no additional test day for the first time before the race, Audi Sport Team Joest will use both days efficiently to find the optimum car set-up and to find the best tire choice for the race. Indeed, grid positions in a 24-hour race are of secondary importance for the final result.

Last year's winners Dindo Capello (Italy), Tom Kristensen (Denmark) and Allan McNish (Scotland) drive the Audi R15 TDI with car number “1”. The three Germans Lucas Luhr, Mike Rockenfeller and Marco Werner share car number “2”. Sharing driving duties in the R15 TDI with car number “3” are Timo Bernhard (Germany) and the two Frenchmen Romain Dumas and Alexandre Premat.

As well as by their car numbers, the three Audi R15 TDI can be distinguished by the different additional colours yellow (car #1) red (car #2) and black (car #3).

Countdown to Le Mans

Le Mans - Aston Martin - Preview

Imagen

An experienced crew for the Aston Martin entry
The countdown has begun and the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours is now looming nearer. Darren Turner returns to the scene of his two class victories as part of Aston Martin's LMP1 squad, competing for the outright win in what is arguably the world's most famous motor race.

Turner will move over to the 008 car for this race where he will be joined by two ex-F1 drivers: Anthony Davidson and Jos Verstappen. This is a strong line-up and Turner is happy to be part of such a solid driving squad.

"I think the crew for 008 is a good one and I'm looking forward to racing with Anthony and Jos. Ant has been a good friend of mine since we raced together at Sebring and Le Mans in 2003. It will be interesting to see how we compare now that so much time has passed. Jos is a hugely experienced Grand Prix driver who has already proved to be very fast around Le Mans in a prototype so I think the three of us together will make a very solid team," he predicted.

The competition is tough in the LMP1 class this year with 20 cars all competing for the outright win. The biggest challenges Aston Martin face are the sheer speed of the diesel-powered Peugeots and of course Audi who have displayed a bit of a knack for winning at Le Mans.

"Our main competition has to be the other petrol-powered teams," explained Darren Turner. "But it would be great if we could get out there and mix it with the Audis and the Peugeots."

"Our test programme hasn't run as smoothly as we would have liked, with a few accidents along the way, so the team is on the back foot a little," he explained. "It will be very difficult to get on the podium this year but this race is different to all the others and you have to keep plugging away as you never know what will happen next."

As a double winner of the GT1 category, Turner knows how special this race is in a GT car and now he's going to find out what it's like in a prototype.

"After the two GT1 wins it is incredible to be able to go back and do Le Mans in an LMP1 car," he said. "I've had a look at the data to compare LMP1 and GT1 speeds to get an idea of the differences between the cars and what it will be like. There is a huge difference in cornering speeds and I can't wait to get out there and try it out."

"I'm really enjoying the car now that I have had the two LMS races to get used to it, and it's a real privilege for me to race at Le Mans for Aston Martin, especially on the 50th anniversary of their last outright win."

The first practice session for the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours gets under way next Wednesday at 1800hrs. Qualifying takes place on the Thursday evening from 1900hrs and the Le Mans 24 Hours roars into action at 1500hrs on Saturday 13 June.

Eight Lola sportscars at Le Mans 24 Hours

Le Mans - Lola - Preview

Imagen

The 24 Heures Du Mans entry list features no less than eight Lola-built chassis for the 77th edition of the great endurance race. With four Lola sports cars in each of the LMP1 and LMP2 classes, Lola is the most represented constructor in the field for the second year running.

There are four Lola-Aston Martin LMP1 cars racing against five Audi's and four Peugeot diesel entries next weekend. Two of these will be from Aston Martin Racing and one each from Speedy Racing Team Sebah and AMR Eastern Europe. All these entries have chosen to race with the Huntingdon-built LMP cars.

The Swiss-entered Speedy Sebah Lola-Aston doubles up the team's effort as they will also race in LMP2 with the Judd-powered Lola B09/80 LMP2 Coupe that impressed so much in the 2008 event. Nicolas Prost, son of four-time F1 World Champion Alain Prost, will race in the LMP1 entry for Speedy Sebah.

RML return to Le Mans for their sixth 24 Hours with a Lola chassis. For 2009 the team will have an evolution of the Mazda MZR turbocharged engine at their disposal. Chris Dyson, himself well aware of the Lola chassis' capability via his Dyson Racing squad in the American Le Mans Series, joins team regulars Mike Newton and Tommy Erdos.

The Italian-based Racing Box squad and the German Kruse-Schiller Motorsport teams complete the Lola entry. Racing Box is a new customer to Lola and got off to a brilliant start with a class victory at Barcelona in April. Kruse-Schiller Motorsport returns for a second Le Mans 24 Hours assault with a Lola. The team retains some continuity on the driving front with Hideki Noda and Jean De Pourtales. Racing journalist Matthew Marsh joins them after showing impressive speed at both the Barcelona and Spa 1000kms races.

Executive Chairman of Lola Group, Martin Birrane, was delighted with the number of Lola's in the field: "Eight cars is a significant number for Lola in what for me is the greatest race in the world. We have some of the finest teams racing our cars and we will be supporting each of them to the best of our capabilities."

"We aim to consolidate our excellent results in recent years at Le Mans and there is a real excitement and anticipation that the eight Lola-built LMP cars can lead the challenge in both LMP1 and LMP2 classes in 2009," he stated.

Since Martin Birrane's acquisition of Lola in 1997, over 60 Le Mans sportscars have been designed and built at its headquarters, this more than any other constructor in the world.

Since 2000 there have been five LMP2 class victories for Lola customer teams. At last year's race the Charouz entered Lola-Aston Martin LMP1 Coupe was the fastest petrol engine car in both qualifying and the race itself.

Qualifying for the 77th running of the 24 Heures Du Mans begins at 19:00 CET on Thursday evening on the 11th. The race itself starts at 15:00 CET on Saturday 13th June.

Famin confident hard work will pay off

Le Mans - Peugeot - Preview

Imagen

After the disappointment which followed its unsuccessful bid to win the 2008 Le Mans 24 Hours with the 908 HDi FAP Peugeot Sport has not eased up in its bid to win the 24 hour classic. 12 months on, they return to Le Mans even stronger thanks to the invaluable additional experience it has gained during its build-up to this year's competition.

Having been able to focus solely on the race, the team goes into the 2009 event feeling composed and confident. That said, surprises are always possible in such an unforgiving contest as Le Mans, an event with a unique blend of human emotion and technical prowess which all manufacturers dream of winning one day, and the legend of which has been forged by countless dramatic turnarounds.

Peugeot Sport has taken onboard the troubles it encountered in 2008 and its programme has since focused on working on the traction control system which gave rise problems when rain started to fall in last year's race, as well as on preventing the radiators from becoming soiled, optimising the tyres with the efficient help of Michelin to match the characteristics of the 908 HDi FAP and on improving wheel-centering to assist the mechanics' work during wheel changes.

In parallel to this work, and to the experience the team has gained at the different circuits it has visited since last June, Peugeot Sport's technical staff have also had to deal with the regulation changes introduced by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest with a view to curbing car performance in 2009.

"To begin with, the ACO's measures mean a drop in engine power because our car must run with a smaller air restrictor, the diameter of which has come down from 39.9mm to 38.3mm," explained Technical Director Bruno Famin. "Meanwhile, the requirement for closed cars to have air conditioning to prevent the cockpit temperature from exceeding 32°C has called for the incorporation of a power take-off at the end of the gearbox to drive the compressor. We have also worked with our partner Bosch to optimise injection and combustion."

"We have paid special attention to aerodynamics, too," Famin continued. "The regulations dictate a smaller rear wing, the width of which has come down from two to 1.6 metres. We have consequently had to revise the overall package in order to rebalance the car by reducing front downforce. This explains the new front-end bodywork we will be running for the first time at Le Mans."

"Then, in April, the ACO forced us to carry 30kg of ballast, and that has had a significant impact on the resistance of certain mechanical parts, notably suspension and brake components. Lastly, the fuel filler pipe is now narrower, and that will add almost three seconds to fuel stops," Famin concluded.

To validate the latest developments, and to enhance the package's reliability as a whole, Peugeot Sport has worked through an extensive test programme at a variety of circuits.

Olivier Quesnel, who took over as Director of Peugeot Sport on January 1, 2009, placed the emphasis on two priority objectives: "The first was to work on reliability by carrying out a high number of endurance simulation tests rather than give the team a busy race programme. I also wanted to make sure that the mechanics were raring to go and not too tired on their arrival at Le Mans."

"It was also important to complete the line-up with experienced drivers, which is why I went for David Brabham and Sebastien Bourdais whose passion for Le Mans and will to win are a secret for nobody."

Pedro Lamy, Christian Klien and Nicolas Minassian will run the #7 Peugeot. Sebastien Bourdais, Franck Montagny and Stéphane Sarrazin run the #8 with David Brabham, Marc Gené and Alex Wurz in the #9 car.

Aiming for victory at their final GT1 race

Le Mans - Corvette Racing - Preview

Imagen

Corvette Racing has unfinished business at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The most successful team in American Le Mans Series history has won its class five times in the classic 24-hour French endurance race (2001-02, 2004-06), establishing Corvette as a global performance icon.

Now after runner-up finishes in Le Mans in 2007 and 2008, Corvette Racing is focused on winning its sixth Le Mans victory at the immense Circuit de La Sarthe on June 13-14.

This year's edition of the world's most prestigious sports car race has special significance for Corvette Racing. The team's Corvette C6.Rs will make their final run in the GT1 category before the team begins its transition to a global GT class in 2010 that is chiefly based on current GT2 regulations.

"From Corvette Racing's inception, the 24 Hours of Le Mans has always been our objective," said program manager Doug Fehan. "GM leadership shared that vision, and Le Mans became the cornerstone of our program for two important reasons."

"First, Corvette is the tip of GM's technological spear, so racing production-based Corvettes was the most expedient way to accelerate the transfer of technology from racing to production," Fehan said. "Second, we knew that Corvette was going to become a global brand. If Corvette was going to compete successfully in the marketplace with Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, and other prestigious marques, then we had to transform the image of Corvette in the eyes of the world."

"Corvette's performance credentials were already well established in North America, but we had to nurture a new respect for Corvette in the rest of the world," Fehan explained. "Le Mans provided the arena to accomplish that, and the results have far exceeded our expectations."

The magic of Le Mans still enthralls even veteran drivers like Corvette Racing's Olivier Beretta, a five-time winner at the Circuit de La Sarthe.

"Le Mans is a very special event, and everyone who has been there can understand what I mean," said the Monegasque driver. "It's difficult to put into words, the feeling that you have when you go to Le Mans - the track, the atmosphere, the history, the race itself."

"Driving in the last race of the GT1 Corvette is something very special," Beretta continued. "Why? Because these cars have raced since 1999, and they have been very successful. I have been part of the Corvette Racing team since 2004, and had the opportunity to win Le Mans three times with Ollie (Gavin) and Jan (Magnussen), so I really hope to win the last race."

Oliver Gavin, who will be teamed with Beretta and Marcel Fassler in the No. 64 Corvette C6.R, agreed: "Do we have unfinished business at Le Mans? I definitely think so."

"Le Mans had been very kind to me from 2004 to 2006 with three consecutive class victories, but you need to have luck to win there," said the Briton. "In the last two years, we've been extremely competitive, driven smartly and had great races, but it seemed the luck just wasn't with us."

"Not only are you battling against the other cars in your class and against all of the other cars in the race, but you are battling against the track itself, the weather conditions, and the clock," Gavin explained. "It's a huge, huge event, and something you can never underestimate. Going back for the last time in GT1, we are very focused on getting that final victory and putting Corvette Racing in the history books as the last GT1 winner of this era."

Corvette Racing's Danish ace Jan Magnussen is also hoping to return to the top step of the podium at Le Mans.

"It would be fantastic to finish this program with a win at Le Mans," said Magnussen, who is teamed with Johnny O'Connell and Antonio Garcia in the No. 63 Compuware Corvette C6.R. "I've been on the podium the last five years -- three times as a winner, but the last two in second place. We've had excellent races, haven't made any mistakes, but somebody else was just a little bit faster. I believe this year we will have a really good shot at it."

Driver roster
Corvette Racing's driver lineup for Le Mans adds Antonio Garcia as the third driver in the No. 63 Corvette C6.R alongside O'Connell and Magnussen. The 29-year-old Spaniard is the hottest driver in international endurance racing, with three major victories in the last year. Garcia was part of the Le Mans-winning GT1 team in 2008, and he shared the overall win in the 2009 24-hour race at Daytona. In March, he won the Twelve Hours of Sebring in his debut with Corvette Racing.

"Antonio is awesome," O'Connell declared. "A third driver must be able to take whatever car he's given and drive it fast, and Antonio showed at Sebring that he can do that. Positive energy, or mojo, or whatever you want to call it, is important in racing. Antonio was in the winning car last year at Le Mans, and he won Daytona and Sebring this year. When a driver is winning, it's really easy to keep winning. I think Antonio is an excellent addition to Corvette Racing."

Marcel Fassler will drive the No. 64 Compuware Corvette C6.R alongside Gavin and Beretta. The Swiss racer won the 24-hour Spa race in 2007, and has honed his racing skills in the European Le Mans Series and FIA GT competition.

"Both of the new Corvette Racing drivers, Marcel and Antonio, are very quick," Beretta said. "Marcel is a great asset; he is fast, successful, very easy to get along with, and he wants exactly the same setup as Ollie and I do. He knows the Corvette C6.R very well, and he raced with us at Sebring. I hope that the three of us will have a good race at Le Mans."

O'Connell's quest

Johnny O'Connell can make history at Le Mans by becoming the only American to score four wins in the famed race. He notched his first GT win in his Le Mans debut in 1994, and repeated with back-to-back wins in 2001-02 with Corvette Racing. The list of three-time American winners at Le Mans includes Phil Hill, Hurley Haywood, Al Holbert, Luigi Chinetti, and Dick Barbour.

"No American has stood on the top step of the podium four times at Le Mans," said O'Connell, a resident of Flowery Branch, Georgia. "Every driver wants to accomplish certain things in his career, and it would be tremendous to get my fourth Le Mans win this year. Corvette Racing has all the tools to do it, and we have a great opportunity."

O'Connell recognizes the difficulty he faces: "Le Mans is truly an intense battle. Twice we finished second there on the same lap as the winner. You replay the race in your mind a thousand times, asking yourself what could we have done differently, what could we have done better? I definitely think we've learned from those experiences. At the end of the GT1 era, we want Corvette to be in the record book with the last big win at Le Mans."

Rule revisions
Changes in the Le Mans regulations will have an impact on Corvette Racing's pit strategy and tire management. The new rules allow only two mechanics and one air gun to be used for tire changes; previously four mechanics using two air guns were allowed to change tires simultaneously. No other work may be done during tire changes, and the equipment and used tires must be behind the line at the front of the garage before the car leaves its pits.

"The new rules mean that a four-tire change will take 25 to 30 seconds per stop, versus about 10 seconds last year," said Corvette Racing team manager Gary Pratt. "The new rules essentially dictate that you double-stint the tires, and you'd really like to do triple stints if the conditions allow. Making the wrong tire choice brings a harsh penalty -- not only does the car lose time on the track, but then you face another 30-second pit stop to change them. Rain could further complicate tire selection and pit strategy.

"The pit spaces at Le Mans are small, so if there is a Safety Car period and everyone comes in for tires, getting in and out of the pits could be difficult," Pratt explained. "Even during routine stops, managing when the cars come in is important. For a two-car team like Corvette Racing, ideally the pit stops should be staggered so the cars come in one at a time."

Another significant rule change is the requirement to qualify and race using the same engine. Previously teams were allowed to install fresh powerplants after qualifying.

"There are six hours of practice on Wednesday night followed by four hours of qualifying on Thursday night," Pratt noted. "We'll install our race engines on Thursday, and consequently we plan to run a limited number of laps during qualifying - a few laps for shakedown and to let the drivers get acclimated, followed by qualifying runs."

"Fortunately Corvette Racing has years of experience at Le Mans and volumes of data, so we should be able to cope with the shortened schedule this year," Pratt predicted.
