Eleven white Audi A4 2.0 TDI models set off yesterday in an attempt to complete the total distance of over 1,650 kilometers (1,025.26 miles) with an average fuel consumption of under four liters (over 58.80 US mpg). Organized by Audi and Auto Bild, the marathon runs between Basel and Vienna and back leading through Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Although most of the journey will be over freeways, some less efficient driving through towns and cities will be logged.
Given the A4's fuel tank capacity of 65 liters the entire trip must be achieved on a single tank of fuel, therefore, averaging less than the 4.1 liters (57.37 US mpg) consumption figures specific to the A4 2.0 TDI. The additional fuel savings will be compensated through careful economical driving style such as strong concentration, anticipatory driving and careful use of the gas pedal.
Additional fuel consumption gauges are installed in the vehicles so that drivers can see the current fuel status at any time. However, what ultimately counts is how much diesel fuel is left in the tank at the finish.
