Racing for Holland starts 2007 preparations





With a very sucessful two day tyre testing session at the Spa – Francorchamps circuit, Racing for Holland and Dome have started the preparations for 2007.


Jan Lammers own physical endurance was being tested fully, as he single handedly drove some 1,400 kilometers (869 miles) in two days time. “Our relationship and cooperation with Dome has become more intense and together we decided a few weeks ago not to complete the LMS season, but to start already with the preperations for Le Mans 2007 and the next LMS season. The first result of this was the tyre test session at Spa, where this time we drove with the Michelins. The test itself went very well and both Racing for Holland and Dome as well as Michelin were very pleased with the result. Quite a number of times we set faster times then this and last year’s LMS pole postion time and in the process we also set an unofficial lap record, with a time of 2’05.68. A perfect test on a great track, going through Eau Rouge full throttle with the Dome is still a phenomenal experience! Together with Dome we will now study the gathered data and implement it into our preparations for next year”.

Unfortunately Jan Lammers had to pass on the Grand Am race in Utah, where he was asked to drive with Andy Wallace and Butch Leitzinger for Howard Boss Motorsports. “Together with Howard Boss we have decided to skip this race”, said Jan. “There were three decisive reasons. The first one was the confirmation of the Spa tyre test, because of this I would not be able to arrive in Utah before Friday. When they asked me to drive for them it was also still unclear if Butch Leitzinger would be able to stay for the entire race, because of his ALMS obligations in the same weekend. But he’s able to drive the entire race, because he is able to fly to the ALMS race together with a TV crew directly after the finish in Utah. Also Butch and Andy are perfectly capable of driving the 9 hour race together. I will probably drive some of the Grand Am races next year”, said Jan who still is very busy as a racing driver, amongst others at the Grand Prix Masters, the next race of which will be held in South Africa in November.

24 Hours of Le Mans



The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the oldest and largest car race in the world. Together with the Grand Prix of Monaco and the Indianapolis 500, it is the most famous and important race of the year. Because of the 300,000 spectators, 2,500 journalists and almost 200,000,000 TV viewers, Le Mans is also the largest annual sports event in Europe.

The organized war of wear and tear for man and machine and managed by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) was first driven in 1923. And, because virtually every car manufacturer has appeared at the start since that time, the prestige of the race has no equal. In 2006 the ACO celebrates it's centenary, making this a special edition.

The race is run on a semi - permanent track that, in it's current configuration has a lenght of 13.650 kilometers. The circuit is mainly comprised of public roads that are open for normal traffic 51 weeks out of the year. The circuit de la Sarthe partly covers the permanent Bugatti circuit. From the Ford Chicane, through the Dunlop Curves and up to the Esses is permanent. Between Tertre Rouge and Mulsanne (Hunaudieres) and the spectacular Porsche Curves, public roads are used.

At present there are four classes at Le Mans, LMP1, LMP2 (Prototypes), the GTS-class and the GT's. There are two prototype-classes based on weight. The LMP1 class with a minium weight of 925 kilo and the LMP2 class with a weight of 720 kilo.

Through the years Le Mans has seen a number of Dutch winners. Gijs van Lennep won the race in 1971 and 1976 and Jan Lammers, driving with Wallace and Dumfries, gave Jaguar their first win in over 50 years in 1988. Lammers celebrates his fourth quintenay at Le Mans this year, competing for the 20th time.

This year represents the 74th edition of the 24 Heures du Mans. Currently, the winner must complete approximately 5000 kilometers (3,100 miles) in 24 hours, including approximately 30 pitstops. To do that it is imperative to have a top speed of 340 km/h (210 mph) and an average speed of 220 km/h (140 mph). In other words - at Le Mans the fastest cars drive a complete Formula 1 season non-stop in one 24 hour period. In toto, 50 cars will start, each piloted by 3 drivers. The ACO invited teams have a chance to test the street circuit on the last Sunday in April. On the Monday and Tuesday before the race in June, all cars are scruteneered at the square in the old town center. Just like the test in May, the Monday and Tuesday checks draw tens of thousands of spectators. Qualification sessions are conducted on Wednesday and Thursday from 7 at night to midnight, which determine starting grid positions. There are four two hour sessions, devided over the two days. Every driver has to drive during both the light session between 19.00 and 21.00 hours and the dark session from 22.00 to 24.00 hours, setting a minimum of three timed laps in the dark. On Friday, a rest day, all drivers are driven through the town center in old cars. This parade draws more than 60,000 people. Saturday sees the start of the race, after a short warm up and lots of spectacular festivities on the grid. Because of the Soccer World Cup the start has this year been moved to 17.00 hours, instead of the traditional 16.00 hour.
