Porsche and Audi dominate WEC test
The timesheets of the five sessions which made up last Friday and Saturday’s programmes were topped by Porsche Team and Audi Sport Team Joest, but the best overall time of the two-day test (1m41.289s) was bagged by the N°20 Porsche 919 Hybrid (Mark Webber/Timo Bernhard/Brendon Hartley). Audi’s best-placed R18 e-tron quattro recorded a 1m42.078s (+0.784s), thanks to Marcel Fässler, while Stéphane Sarrazin was the fastest Toyota TS040 Hybrid driver (1m42.356s).
The Porsche 919 Hybrid (finally homologated in the ‘6MJ’ category) completed 614 laps (3,556km), in addition to the 4,756km it covered at the same circuit earlier last week. Audi’s two prototypes totalled 291 laps (1,685km), while the two Toyota TS040 Hybrid spent the most time on the track (667 laps, 3,862km).
Rebellion Racing attended the test with two Lola-Toyota B12/60 LMP1 prototypes, chiefly in order to give new recruits Dominik Kraihamer and Fabio Leimer some track time. The Swiss team took advantage of the weekend to confirm that its ‘R-One’ project is coming along and that it has a new partner, the simulator manufacturer Ellip6.
The Prologue also enabled Michelin to run its new range of LMP1 slicks (31/71-18) and evaluate the operating windows of each type of compound. The French firm’s engineers also worked with their partners to harmonise the way its tyres worked with the different cars. Twenty-one of the 27 cars at Le Castellet were on Michelin rubber.
The LMP2 class was dominated by Millennium Racing’s Oreca-Nissan, with Shinji Nakano setting the fastest lap in the N°23 car (1m48s970). It will be interesting to compare that time with the ELMS cars which are testing at Le Castellet this week. SMP Racing had trouble finding the ideal set-up for its Oreca03-Nissans, however.
Porsche Team Manthey only had one 911 RSR at the test in the LMGTE Pro class but it topped the order in three of the five sessions. The best time of all was the work of Frédéric Makowiecki on Saturday morning (1m58.041s). WEC debutant James Calado was faster than his team-mates Bruni and Rigon in the N°71 Ferrari (AF Corse), while James Rossiter was the fastest driver in RAM Racing’s Ferrari. Aston Martin’s new trio (Rees/O’Young/MacDowal) all got a chance to drive the Vantage V8 on Michelin’s customer tyres.
In LMGTE Am, Paolo Ruberti was fastest in every session in 8Star Motorsports’ Ferrari 458. In the overall combined order, it was chased by the N°81 Ferrari (AF Corse, Sam Bird) and Prospeed Competition’s Porsche (Mathieu Vaxivière).
This week’s two-day European Le Mans Series test has attracted 37 cars, including 11 LMP2 prototypes. Sébastien Loeb Racing has confirmed Rast, Charouz, Capillaire and Marroc as the drivers of its Oreca03-Nissan/Michelin. The ELMS Platinum drivers in action will include Christian Klien (Morand Racing), Filipe Albuquerque (Jota Sport) and Nelson Panciatici (Alpine/Michelin).

Nissan launches 2015 LMP1 World Endurance and Le Mans programme
Nissan will take on Audi, Toyota and Porsche in the World Endurance Championship from the start of next season.
The Japanese manufacturer admitted last year that it was already planning its move into the LMP1 category for 2015, which was a condition of the entry for its ZEOD RC experimental racer in this year's Le Mans 24 Hours.
Now, Nissan has confirmed that it will mount a two-car attack on the full WEC with a car to be known as the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO.
Nissan vice-president Andy Palmer explained that his company wanted to exploit the new energy-based P1 rules introduced for this season by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest at Le Mans and the FIA.
"We applaud the ACO and FIA for the work they have done to get the rules right," he said.
"LMP1 is not just an arms race - all our rivals in the class have taken different technical approaches and we will be doing the same."
He explained that Nissan wanted "to win in a very different way to that of our rivals".
"We won't be turning up in a vehicle that is a basically another hybrid that looks like another Porsche, Audi or Toyota — they all look the same to me. Our intention is to do something that is a little bit different."
Nissan, which made its announcement in London on Friday afternoon, has yet to disclose technical details of the car or where it will be built.
Shoichi Miyatani, boss of Nissan competition and tuning arm NISMO, said: "The design and build of the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO is a global project with its DNA firmly rooted in Japan.
"The team comprises engineers and technical crew from Japan, the US and Europe."
He added that NISMO would be "contributing strongly" to the project.
It is understood that work on the project is advanced and that the car will be testing in October.
The Nissan LMP1 will carry the name of the marque's road-going GT-R musclecar because it "symbolises the ultimate in Nissan's performance", according to Miyatani.

Strakka Racing withdraws from Le Mans
Damage sustained at final pre Le Mans test leads team regretfully to withdraw from Le Mans race
Following a testing ‘off’ at Spa this week, Strakka Racing has made the very difficult decision to withdraw from this year’s Le Mans race. After an assessment of the damage and factoring the short timeframe ahead of the Le Mans Test Day, the team together with chassis manufacturer DOME has today confirmed it will unfortunately have to pull its entry.
“It happened on the first day’s running at Eau Rouge and if you leave the track there, it is going to result in damage,” says team manager Karl Patman. “Danny Watts was driving at the time. Crucially, he’s absolutely fine but we don’t have the time to be able to assess, repair the car and acquire sufficient spares in time. It has been a tight programme and this put any chance of competing out of the window.”
“Strakka Racing would like to apologise to the organisers, technical partners and our fans for both the unfortunate timing and impact of withdrawing from the Le Mans 24 Hours race,” says team founder Nick Leventis. “Everybody has worked tirelessly to get this car to where it needs to be and we are really sorry that we won’t be out this year. We owe it to everyone involved in the project to make this a success and we will.”
Strakka Racing remains very committed to the FIA World Endurance Championship and will be working closely with the organisers to ensure the team is back racing as soon as the issues from Spa have been resolved.

Re: 24 HORAS DE LEMANS 2014 - INFO PREVIA Y MAS
