Autoblog.com reported last monday (July 30th) that Toyota is in the process of forming a special committee dedicated to creating interesting cars, mainly because Toyota has no sports cars left in their current line-up. Lexus is of course working on some good stuff, i.e. the IS-F and LF-A, but since the MR2 and Supra, Toyota has only been supplying the non-performance section of the market.
So the time has come for the resurrection of the AE86, a Corolla coupe from the 80's. Japanese car magazine Best Car (Japanese language site) has pried loose some initial specs of the AE86:
* under 4m long,
* approximately 1,7 m wide,
* measuring 1,35m from the ground up,
* target weight lies under 1000kg,
* will most likely be powered by a 1,5 liter 2NZ-FE engine.
Toyota's new partner, Fuji Heavy Industries (or Subaru to most people) will be supplying the RWD drivetrain.
Like the Scion xD, which is branded as the Toyota ist in Japan, there is a good possiblity that the AE86 might make it to the USA as a new Scion tC, or as an entirely new Scion budget performance car. Toyota is aiming for a 1.5mil Yen (or $12,300 / under 10,000Euro) price tag.

Poco después de que Toyota anunciara la formación de un “comité para crear automóviles interesantes”, la revista Best Car revela que el largamente rumoreado AE86 ha recibido el visto bueno, esperándonos en los concesionarios en el invierno de 2008 (al menos en Japón).
El nuevo artículo se atreve incluso a entrar en detalles técnicos pese a no haber todavía un anuncio oficial; menos de 4 metros de largo y 1,7 metros de ancho, solo 1,35 metros de altura y un peso inferior a una tonelada. ¿Motor? En teoría, el AE86 se deslizará en las curvas gracias a un 1,5 2NZ-FE de 120 caballos, que pueden no parecer muchos, aunque con su peso y dimensiones deberían bastar para garantizar unas buenas prestaciones (no hablemos ya de lo que harán con él los especialistas del tuning nipón). Pero espera, porque si la noticia te ha sorprendido, más lo hará el origen de su plataforma. Porque si hace meses se especulaba con la posibilidad de que Toyota creara un nuevo chasis desde cero, ahora Best Car afirma que el esqueleto el AE86 será obra y arte de Fuji Heavy Industries, es decir, Subaru.
¿Lo mejor del asunto? Los ejecutivos de Toyota han dejado muy claro que quieren al modelo por debajo del millón y medio de yenes, o lo que es lo mismo, 9.200 euros/12.300 dólares al cambio de hoy. Suena bien, ¿eh?
tiene más motor el yaris t sport nuevo que ese... de hecho el 2NZ-FE no es el mismo que tiene el yaris sedan en éste momento? Tienen que hacer una versión chiva si no que awebado!!!
Como me gusta ese carro...me parece q la trompa tiene un aire a RX8...lastima q no traiga un motor un toq mas chiva...pero esta muy muy chuzo... , en cuanto andarian esos carros en caso de venir a CR?

Si ese carro llega al mercado fijo vamos a ver miles de swaps con motores de toda epoca y marca
Scion's third model is an attractive, coupe-styled hatchback. While the first two Scion models offer value, unique styling, and customization for younger buyers, the tC is the first to offer some decent performance credentials. For around 16k, the tc offers 160hp, a five-speed manual, 17" alloy wheels, and some decent 215/45R17 tires. Also available for the tc, is the dealer-installed TRD-developed supercharger that takes the horsepower up to 200.
What Changed:
The tC adds the tC Spec Package. The Spec Package is intended to serve as a starting point for someone looking to customize their tC. The biggest difference is the downgraded 205/55R16 tires riding on steel wheels with covers.
