I guess I am the 'Ghost Rider' aka Dary! We ran a few laps on Friday to test the car. This is the first time the car has been run on a track in 4-5 years. As it was mentioned, the car was in the aduana for a long time, almost 2.5 years! While it was there is was put outside into the rain so basically we have had to build a new car. We have redone the car several times to try and get her ready for running in Guacima. Unfortunatly we had been unable to test the car before a big race.
As expected (with a new racecar) the car had problems once we got on the track...the ignition was cutting by popping the breaker on the left hand turn around the lake requiring me to reset the breaker to get the engine to run again (mid corner). Then the water bottle (for drinking) was mounted too high in the car and every time I turned right I would get a spash of water in the face and inside my helmet visor, then the shifter knob came off the shifter in my hand and I had to drive without it. With all of this I was able to keep going and learned to bite on the hose in Right hand turns to keep it from spashing me and the ignition seemed to cure itself and I was able to shift most of the time without the knob and with badly adjusted linkage on the shifter making it hard to find gears. Just as I started to pick up the speed I was pulling 1.3 G's in the Left hander before the 'S's and the car suddenly went out of control....I counter steered and got the car under control luckely. I thought I had a tire blow out but when we got back to the pits we found the rear right side lower A-Arm broke the mount and was allowing the rear tire to move 3"-4" side to side!
My team (a greater group of guys I will never know) worked all night and I mean all night and got 50% done. This morning I showed up early with another crew member and did as much as we could before the rest of the team could get in to help. I was suited up and ready yo go out again for the last session today but just missed it.
The car is ready for tomarrow morning and we have put on new tires (we had on 5 year old tires the other day so we did not ruin a new set) to give us a chance to go a little better. We are going to have to learn a lot in the warm up session in the morning so we can make as many adjustments as we can before the 1st race!
We are hoping to finish the race and learn a lot for next season, I would like to not finish last too but I would not bet on that!! Wish us luck.....

Well, Thanks Mr. Daryl for sharing all the problems you've been into taking the car to the track, we all hope you do well tomorrow at the "3 Horas de Costa Rica."PorscheRacer escribió:I guess I am the 'Ghost Rider' aka Dary! I have a question: Why did the car stayed more than 2 years at the "aduana"?
Oh, and one more thing, can you share the technical specs on this Porsche?
Thank you, and good luck tomorrow...

Thanks for your support!
There is a long discussion in the forum archives as to why it took so long to get out of the aduana but the short version is that there has never been a legalised way to bring a race car into Costa Rica. I am actually the first legal race car importer now. Obiously there are other ways to bring race cars in that I was not willing to do so I tool the hard road.
The car is a tube frame, 2001 Porsche Boxster. It is in GT2 specifications. Due to the lack of GT2 we are running GT1 and have the smallest engine in GT1 3598cc 6 cyl and with only 2 valves per cyl. The transaxle is Fortin manual non-sequential. She has 13" rotors with 6 piston calipers in front and four piston in back. She is 50/50 weight balanced and has a very low center of gravity. Due to the situation in the aduana she is more a Costa Rican built car than anything else. Of course she is also the only approved open top car in the races as well.
Wish us luck!

We ran the car on Sunday during the warm up for the 3 hours. During the warm up I was flagged to come in to pit after 7 laps or so. When I pulled into the pits the car caught fire.
We had slightly overfilled the car with oil and the catch tank could not fill fast enough to keep the oil from escaping the breather filter at the top of the tank. When the oil came out it was carried back through the air ducts in the car when I was at speed. But when I stopped in the pits, the air was'nt there any more and the oil hit the exhaust system and started a fire. I have a large onboard fire system so I activated the system and evacuated the car. The fire stopped instantly when the Halon took all the air away.
There is ab solutly no damage to the car. However the fire system is a one time use system and with the uncertainty of the oil level and the breather tank venting out oil, it would be too risky to run the car without the fire system working. Further a fire during the championship race and the possible interuption of the event was cause for the organisers and myself to decide not to run the car further until we have more time to work out the 'bugs'.
She seems to have great potential. Though we had limited time on the track, and I intentionaly drove conservitively and stayed behind other cars to find the 'line', I could easily see the car keeping up with the other GT2 cars and some of the slower GT1 cars. She has tremendous braking ability and the engine is both strong and responsive. The shifter worked much better after some early AM repairs. I limited the RPM to 7500 RPM to get used to the car and the track too so she has more in her when I raise the redline to 9000 RPM. The aerodynamics are a little to strong as I scraped about 2 cm off of my rear diffuser on the straights becasue of the rear wing and diffuser overcoming the heavy rear springs and bump stops! The suspention was horrible becasue with the last min. repairs and welding we could do nothing more than stand back and look at the wheels for an alighnment! She would push into the corners and oversteer out!
One thing I can promise is that we will be much more prepared for the next event as we are starting to test next week for March! Now we need to decide if we stay GT2 or go Twin Turbocharged and really run GT2?

Finally the Ghost Rider appeared. Mr Dary wish you good luck in next year's championship.
You will have a long time to get use to the track and to the car.
Hope that with your car and other GT2 cars, the category can be open again.
If you have some pictures of the car it will be nice to see them.
Thanks.
