Strong Porsche contingent at twelve hour classic
Stuttgart. A true classic traditionally kicks off the American Le Mans Series season: The 12 Hours of Sebring, run for the 59th time on the Sebring International Raceway in the heart of Florida on 19 March, is the oldest and toughest sports car race in the USA. Six Porsche works drivers helm customer-run Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, including the GT class title defenders Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA).
The race
The world’s most famous 12 hour race celebrated its inauguration on 15 March, 1952, and, together with the 24 hour events in Daytona and Le Mans, is one of the most traditional long distance classics. Immortalised on the winners’ list are racing legends like Juan Manuel Fangio, Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Jacky Ickx and Mario Andretti. Race mad Hollywood stars have also competed, like Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, who finished second overall in 1970 with a Porsche 908.
The circuit
The 5.954 kilometre Sebring International Raceway, an airfield track in 17 corners, is infamous for its bumpy surface. Added to this is the often very high temperature. These stress factors on man and machine make this race a real test of endurance leading up to the Le Mans 24 Hours.
The Porsche drivers
As reigning GT champions of the American Le Mans Series, Porsche works drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA) take up the prestigious race with their factory driver teammate Marc Lieb (Germany). The trio with the 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Flying Lizard Motorsports spearheads Porsche’s customer teams in their GT class campaign against strong opposition from BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Jaguar and Lamborghini. The other Porsche factory pilots in the GT Endurance class are Wolf Henzler (Germany) driving for Team Falken, Richard Lietz (Austria) for Proton Competition and Marco Holzer (Germany) for Flying Lizard Motorsports. René Rast (Germany) celebrates his first ever USA race in the 911 GT3 RSR of Paul Miller Racing. Audi also receives support from two Porsche works drivers: Le Mans winners Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) contest the LMP1 sports prototype class with the Audi R15+.
Comments before the race
Hartmut Kristen, Porsche Head of Motorsport: “Sebring is a real highlight with which to kick off the new season. The race is the first important chance to see where we stand on a very demanding circuit. I think we’re all quite interested to see what the work over winter has yielded.”
Joerg Bergmeister: “It’s the toughest race of the season. In Sebring, extra points are awarded, so that alone is enough to make a good result especially important. A retirement here would be a real handicap in your bid for the title. We’ve done a lot of testing and are well prepared. The improvements on our 911 GT3 RSR are very promising. But it’ll be in qualifying at the earliest when we see if we’ve done everything right.”
Patrick Long: “This is our third season with Flying Lizard Motorsports, so we all know how to work well together. This is particularly advantageous with pit stops, which can play a decisive role at such a long race.”
Marc Lieb: “Sebring is often full of surprises. It has the fullest grid of the year. Good preparation is important for success, but it’s no guarantee.”
Wolf Henzler: “This is the race with the best drivers and the most spectators. The fans’ enthusiasm is fantastic. Americans simply want to see sports cars. Lots of fans even came and watched us testing.”
Marco Holzer: “This is my first time in Sebring and I can’t wait. I’ve just contested Daytona and now here’s the next classic – that’s the sort of start to the season that every race driver dreams of.”
Richard Lietz: “Fantastic race, fantastic fans. You’re always driving at the limit and you can’t afford to make one mistake. Only then do you have a chance. It’s a great challenge, but one that is huge fun.”
The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR
The most successful GT race car of the last years takes off into the new season with a raft of improvements. The output of the four-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine has increased to 455 hp (335 kW). Priority in the further development of the car was given to the newly designed aerodynamics at the front and rear. Again in 2010, the 911 GT3 RSR won the environmental "Michelin Green X Challenge” classification, as the GT vehicle with the best overall efficiency in the American Le Mans Series.
Porsche’s successes
With 18 overall and 64 class victories, Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in the history of the Sebring 12 hour race. The first overall win in 1960 went to Hans Herrmann and Olivier Gendebien with the Porsche RS 60. In an unprecedented winning streak from 1976 to 1988, Porsche celebrated 13 overall wins in a row with drivers like Hurley Haywood, Al Holbert, Brian Redman, Bob Wollek, A.J. Foyt, Bobby Rahal and Hans-Joachim Stuck. The most recent overall win for Porsche was in 2008 with Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Emmanuel Collard at the wheel of the RS Spyder fielded by Penske Racing. That same year, Joerg Bergmeister, Wolf Henzler and Marc Lieb also secured GT2 class honours with the 911 GT3 RSR run by Flying Lizard Motorsports.
The schedule
The 12 Hours of Sebring starts on Saturday, 19 March, at 10.30 hours local time (16.30 hours CET). The GT qualifying on Friday will be broadcast on the internet from 21.00 hours CET on http://www.porsche.com/alms-live.
The American Le Mans Series
The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) was created in 1999 for sports prototypes and GT vehicles. The regulations correspond to those of the Le Mans 24 hour race. At the season-opener in Sebring, the field is divided into six classes that start together but are classified separately:
GT class: This most popular class amongst car manufacturers is traditionally very well supported: Slightly modified standard sports cars with 440 to 460 hp and a minimum weight of 1,125 – 1,325 kilograms (e.g. Porsche 911 GT3 RSR).
GTE AM class: Like the GT class, but the regulations dictate that each vehicle must have one professional driver at the most.
GTC class: This class is reserved for vehicles from one-make race series (e.g. Porsche 911 GT3 Cup).
LMP1 class: Sports prototypes with up to 750 hp and a minimum weight of 900 kilograms (petrol engines) or 930 kilograms (diesel engines).
LMP2 class: Sports prototypes with ca. 440 hp and an 825 kg minimum weight.
LMPC class: Prototype brand trophy series for the ORECA FLM 09.

Finalmente JaguarRSR ha confirmado esta tarde lo que era un secreto a voces, y del que ya nos habíamos hecho eco en SportMotores.es en diferentes ocasiones: el fichaje de Oriol Serviá.
El piloto de Pals se convierte así en el cuarto piloto español en la carrera que tendrá lugar la semana que viene en Florida, tras Marc Gené, Antonio García y Lucas Ordoñez. Serviá pilotará uno de los dos JaguarRSR XKR GT que el equipo norteamericano JaguarRSR pondrá en liza en las 12 horas de Sebring, teniendo como compañeros de equipo a dos antiguos rivales suyos en las competiciones de monoplazas como son Bruno Junqueira y Cristiano da Matta, este último precisamente compañero suyo en la Champ Car en 2000.
"Estoy entusiasmado de estar en las 12 horas de Sebring con JaguarRSR. Ser parte de la familia de Jaguar es un honor. Sé que el equipo ha estado trabajando duro durante todo el invierno preparándose para esta temporada y Sebring será el lugar perfecto para mostrar los progresos realizados. Hacer equipo con da Matta y Junqueira lo hacer mejor todavía, no sólo porque somos grandes amigos sino porque también hemos competido en los mismos equipos y tenemos un gran respeto mutuo como pilotos", explicaba Serviá, que probó por primera vez el GT británico en los dos días de tests que los de Paul Gentilozzi completaron en Sebring a finales de Febrero. Su participación podría prolongarse en al menos otras dos carreras más, una de ellas Petit Le Mans en Road Atlanta.
El segundo coche de JaguarRSR será confiado a PJ Jones, Rocky Moran Jr y Kenny Wilden.

AF CORSE is preparing for the ILMC and LMS Championships. At the first race will be two 458 and a F430.
The 2011 season of AF CORSE began on the 11th- 12th March with the official test of the Le Mans Series at Paul Ricard circuit (Le Castellet, France).
The official Team of FERRARI is the only representing Italy in the prestigiuos international championships of ACO Le Mans and lined up, for the test, three Ferrari. The first one is the newborn 458 Italia GTC driven by Giancarlo Fisichella, third Scuderia Ferrari F1 driver, and by Gianmaria Bruni, world champion Fia GT2 in 2008. The 458 in GT2 version debuted on track and the Fisichella-Bruni car will compete, during this season, in the GTE PRO category.
The other two cars lined up for the Le Mans Series, both in the PRO AM category, are the Ferrari F430 with the crew Giuseppe Perazzini-Marco Cioci-Stephane Lemeret and Robert Kauffman-Michael Waltrip-Rui Aguas. However, the Team who AF Corse lined up for the official test is not yet the definitive of the season.
Before the first race, an another 458 Italia will join the Ferrari fleet; the second GT2 of the Italian team, always engaged in the GTE Pro category, will be driven by Toni Vilander and Jaime Melo. But the "appointment" on the track do not stop here for the Amato Ferrari team. In the schedule, among the other things still to be revealed, there are also the 12 Hours of Sebring and the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Carlos Kauffmann Enfrenta Triple Desafío en Sebring
El venezolano es candidato al triunfo en el comienzo del campeonato American Le Mans Series en la categoría GTC
Todo está listo para el arranque del campeonato automovilístico American Le Mans Series que durante toda la presente semana se desarrollará en el autódromo de Sebring, en los Estados Unidos, clásico evento de larga duración en el que el venezolano Carlos Kauffmann participará en tres carreras junto a la escudería NGT Motorsport.
Un palpitante programa encarará Carlos Kauffmann en el aeródromo de Florida, donde el jueves y viernes irá por la victoria en la categoría IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge y el sábado hará lo propio en su debut en las 12 Horas de Sebring en compañía de Henrique Cisneros y Sean Edwards, midiéndose a los mejores corredores del orbe.
Carlos Kauffmann parte como uno de los candidatos al triunfo en la categoría GTC en la 59 edición anual Mobil 1 Doce Horas de Sebring presentado por “Fresh from Florida”, prueba que comenzará a las 10 y 30 de la mañana del sábado 19. En la clase GTC han confirmado su participación 8 máquinas Porsche 911 GT3 que se unen a otros 48 vehículos en las divisiones LMPC, LMP1, LMP2, y GT.
El caraqueño Carlos Kauffmann ya sabe lo que es festejar en el podio de Sebring, puesto que en el inicio de la temporada 2010 se estrenó por todo lo alto en el automovilismo internacional al imponerse en las dos carreras de la serie IMSA GT3 Patron, las primeras de media docena de victorias en el año que lo llevaron a conquistar el tercer lugar en la clasificación general en la división Gold Cup.
Ahora Kauffmann tratará de repetir sus conquistas pero en la clase mayor Platiniun Cup que emplea la más reciente y potente versión del Porsche 997. Durante los primeros días de febrero, la pista de Sebring hospedó los entrenamientos invernales en los que el venezolano fue el más rápido absoluto tanto en el Porsche de la serie IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge como en el que usará para las 12 Horas de Sebring en la modalidad GTC.
Cada una de las mangas del campeonato IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge tiene una duración de 45 minutos. La primera fecha está pautada el jueves 17 de marzo, carrera que arrancará a las 5 de la tarde, en tanto la segunda se efectuará el viernes 18 a las 4 y 20. Los entrenamientos libres y las clasificaciones se desarrollarán a partir de este martes 15 de marzo.
Durante las prácticas invernales Carlos Kauffmann resultó insuperable en el Porsche modelo 997 año 2011 de la serie IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, al obtener un registro de 2:06.563 y también encabezó los registros en la categoría GTC de American Le Mans con un crono de 2:05.678, al ser hasta medio segundo más veloces que el auto más cercano en su división, además de superar en 3 décimas lo hecho el año pasado por el auto más veloz.
El calendario 2011 de IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge está estructurado sobre un total de 8 fechas dobles en distintos escenarios norteamericanos, incluida la primera presentación dentro del programa del Gran Premio de Canadá de Fórmula 1.
Kauffmann Se Estrena En Las 12 Horas De Sebring
La pareja compuesta por Carlos Kauffmann y Henrique Cisneros, acompañada por el especialista británico Sean Edwards, hará su debut en las 12 Horas de Sebring, donde tendrán que enfrentarse a un mayor número de adversarios con máquinas mucho más potentes y veloces, donde la resistencia y la estrategia resultarán fundamentales para lograr la victoria en su categoría.
Como en toda carrera de largo aliento como la de Sebring, las condiciones físicas resultarán fundamentales, razón por la que Carlos Kauffmann se ha preparado especialmente para poder soportar los rigores de la justa donde la concentración y la resistencia asumen un rol protagónico.

Un palpitante programa encarará Carlos Kauffmann en el aeródromo de Florida, donde el jueves y viernes irá por la victoria en la categoría IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge y el sábado hará lo propio en su debut en las 12 Horas de Sebring en compañía de Henrique Cisneros y Sean Edwards, midiéndose a los mejores corredores del orbe.
Carlos Kauffmann parte como uno de los candidatos al triunfo en la categoría GTC en la 59 edición anual Mobil 1 Doce Horas de Sebring presentado por “Fresh from Florida”, prueba que comenzará a las 10 y 30 de la mañana del sábado 19. En la clase GTC han confirmado su participación 8 máquinas Porsche 911 GT3 que se unen a otros 48 vehículos en las divisiones LMPC, LMP1, LMP2, y GT.
El caraqueño Carlos Kauffmann ya sabe lo que es festejar en el podio de Sebring, puesto que en el inicio de la temporada 2010 se estrenó por todo lo alto en el automovilismo internacional al imponerse en las dos carreras de la serie IMSA GT3 Patron, las primeras de media docena de victorias en el año que lo llevaron a conquistar el tercer lugar en la clasificación general en la división Gold Cup.
Ahora Kauffmann tratará de repetir sus conquistas pero en la clase mayor Platiniun Cup que emplea la más reciente y potente versión del Porsche 997. Durante los primeros días de febrero, la pista de Sebring hospedó los entrenamientos invernales en los que el venezolano fue el más rápido absoluto tanto en el Porsche de la serie IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge como en el que usará para las 12 Horas de Sebring en la modalidad GTC.
Cada una de las mangas del campeonato IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge tiene una duración de 45 minutos. La primera fecha está pautada el jueves 17 de marzo, carrera que arrancará a las 5 de la tarde, en tanto la segunda se efectuará el viernes 18 a las 4 y 20. Los entrenamientos libres y las clasificaciones se desarrollarán a partir de este martes 15 de marzo.
Durante las prácticas invernales Carlos Kauffmann resultó insuperable en el Porsche modelo 997 año 2011 de la serie IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, al obtener un registro de 2:06.563 y también encabezó los registros en la categoría GTC de American Le Mans con un crono de 2:05.678, al ser hasta medio segundo más veloces que el auto más cercano en su división, además de superar en 3 décimas lo hecho el año pasado por el auto más veloz.
El calendario 2011 de IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge está estructurado sobre un total de 8 fechas dobles en distintos escenarios norteamericanos, incluida la primera presentación dentro del programa del Gran Premio de Canadá de Fórmula 1.

La pareja compuesta por Carlos Kauffmann y Henrique Cisneros, acompañada por el especialista británico Sean Edwards, hará su debut en las 12 Horas de Sebring, donde tendrán que enfrentarse a un mayor número de adversarios con máquinas mucho más potentes y veloces, donde la resistencia y la estrategia resultarán fundamentales para lograr la victoria en su categoría.

BMW Team RLL ready to get 2011 season started.
BMW Team RLL will field two newly constructed BMW M3 GT cars in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) this season. On Saturday, the 12 Hours of Sebring at “Sebring International Raceway” traditionally provides the stage for the curtain-raiser to this popular endurance championship.
The Bobby Rahal led team is focused on continuing last season’s success. In 2010, BMW Team RLL won both the Team and Manufacturer titles in the GT class with BMW M3 GT2 cars.At the same time, Sebring will also see the first points awarded in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC), in which BMW Motorsport will once again be competing this year. BMW Team Schnitzer will be responsible for the fielding two BMW M3 GT cars at the European rounds of the ILMC, which include the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours, as well as the season finale in China.
In Sebring, the no. 55 BMW M3 GT will be driven by Dirk Werner, Bill Auberlen and Augusto Farfus. Dirk Müller, Joey Hand and Andy Priaulx will alternate behind the wheel of the no. 56 car. Last year, BMW Team RLL started the season in style, finishing second and third in Florida.
Dirk Werner: “I’m very happy to drive a full championship season with BMW Team RLL and Bill Auberlen. With the practice starting on Monday there will be enough time to get rid of the winter-rust during the week. The field in the GTE class is impressive and the race is very demanding. To win everything has to be 100%.”
Bill Auberlen: “Last year at Sebring we were on the second and third step of the podium. This year the plan is to be on the first and second step. I’m looking forward to co-driving with Dirk Werner and Augusto Farfus as I know the BMW M3 GT will always be in perfect hands.”
Augusto Farfus: “It’s great to be back at the wheel of the BMW M3 GT. My season started well with victory in the Dubai 24 Hours. Now it’s time to get the ball rolling in ALMS and ILMC. We have a great team, great drivers and a great car – so I hope we can score a strong result in Sebring. I’m looking forward to driving in America. Sebring has a long tradition and the fans are enthusiastic.”

Como mencione en el post anterior, la mayoria de los equipos han estado probando en Sebring y se habla de que el trio Montagny, Sarrazin y Lamy han puesto a Peugeot arriba con el mejor tiempos, el cual es de 1'47 "678 mientras que el segundo mejor tiempo va para los de Audi con Dumas, Bernhard y Rockenfeller logrando establecer un tiempo de 1'48" 025 a lo largo del dia en cuanto a LMP1's.
En los Prototipos 2 el mejor tiempo lo ha establecido el ORECA Nissan Signatech con 1'56 "590, mas de 3 segundos por delante del Lola-Honda de Level 5 Motorsport. Dentro de la categoria GT el mejor tiempo es para el BMW M3 de RLL con Bill Auberlen, Augusto Farfus y Werner logrando un 2'01 "911 seguido muy de cerca en los tiempos por el Porsche del equipo Flying Lizard de Bergmeister, Patrick Long y Lieb.
En la GT-Am encabeza la lista de tiempos la Ferrari 430 de Krohn Racing con 2'03 "217, seguido a mas de un segundo por el Corvette de Larbre.
Un dato interesante es que los LMPC estan siendo mas rapidos que los LMP2, hoy el FLM09 de CORE Racing ha hecho un tiempo de 1'55 "060 (comparado al 1'56 "590 que ha sido el mejor tiempo de los LMP2 el dia de hoy)

PEUGEOT BACK OUT FRONT IN SEBRING TESTING
Peugeot picked up Monday where it left off last year with the fastest time in Monday’s opening test session for the 59th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida. One of the two new factory Peugeot 908s – driven by Franck Montagny, Stephane Sarrazin and Pedro Lamy – turned a best lap of 1:47.678 during the four-hour session in the lead-up to the opening round of the 2011 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.
The 2011-spec 908s are making their racing debut this week, and Peugeot enters as the defending Sebring race-winner. Things were incredibly close though with the top six cars within 0.629 seconds. The first of Audi Sport Team Joest’s Audi R15 prototypes sat second at 1:48.025; that was the car of reigning Le Mans 24 Hours champions Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Mike Rockenfeller.
Next up was defending ALMS prototype champion Highcroft Racing and its new HPD ARX-01e of David Brabham, Simon Pagenaud and Marino Franchitti. It was the only non-diesel among the top five cars.
The GT battle was just as close with the first four cars within 0.519 seconds. The first of BMW Motorsport’s BMW M3 GT of Bill Auberlen, Augusto Farfus and Dirk Werner set a lap of 2:01.911 for a 0.152-second gap over the first of Flying Lizard Motorsports’ Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs; the lead one is driven by Jörg Bergmeister, Patrick Long and Marc Lieb.
Next up was the first of Corvette Racing’s two Corvette C6.Rs, a 2:01.909 for the car of Olivier Beretta, Tommy Milner and Antonio Garcia. It was just 0.172 seconds better than the second BMW entry.
Krohn Racing’s Ferrari F430 GT was the quickest of the GTE Am entries. Nic Jonsson, driving with Tracy Krohn and Michele Rugolo, set a lap of 2:03.217. The Krohn entry was 1.021 seconds clear of Larbre Competition’s Corvette C6.R of Julien Canal, Gabrielle Gardel and Patrick Bornhauser.
In LMP2, Signatech Nissan’s ORECA-Nissan of Franck Mailleux and Lucas Ordonez was quickest in class at 1:56.590. The car, making its first start, was 3.848 seconds ahead of Level 5 Motorsports’ new Lola-Honda coupe. Scott Tucker, Christophe Bouchut and Joao Barbosa are splitting duties.
CORE autosport’s two ORECA FLM09s were quickest in LMP Challenge in the team’s first weekend of ALMS competition. The first car of Ryan Dalziel, Jon Bennett and Frankie Montecalvo set the fastest time at 1:55.060, good enough for a 0.323-second cushion over the sister car of Gunnar Jeannette, Ricardo Gonzalez and Rudy Junco.
PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports’ entry of Ken Dobson, Ryan Lewis and Henri Richard was third in class at 1:56.195.
TRG held the top two spots in GT Challenge, led by the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entry of Duncan Ende, Spencer Pumpelly and Alain Li. The second entry of Dion von Moltke was second, just 0.479 seconds back. Magus Racing’s Porsche of Matthew Marsh, John Potter and Craig Stanton was third at 2:06.366.
Monday afternoon’s session runs from 1 to 5 p.m. ET.

Audi preview
Audi starts the 2011 sports car season in the 12 Hours of Sebring on March 19. Making its final appearance is the Audi R15 TDI, which had to be modified to comply with the new regulations and which carries the project name “R15 plus plus” internally. Timo Bernhard/Romain Dumas/Mike Rockenfeller (D/F/D), last year’s Le Mans winners, as well as Dindo Capello/Allan McNish/Tom Kristensen (I/GB/DK), Le-Mans winners from 2008, drive the two diesel race sports cars.
A long sports car season starts for Audi Sport Team Joest in March: On the agenda up to November are seven races, the Le Mans test weekend and numerous tests with the Audi R15 TDI and the new Audi R18, which does not, however, race at Sebring. So as not to interrupt preparations for the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 11/12 the test and development program with the R18 continues to run in parallel to the opening round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup 2011 (ILMC) season.
As a result one car in particular bids farewell at the 12 Hours of Sebring, a car that made its debut here two years ago: the Audi R15 TDI. It celebrated its 2009 premiere with a victory – the ninth for Audi in this traditional event in US state of Florida since 2000.
For the second appearance at Sebring the diesel racing sports car competes under completely new conditions. New technical regulations from the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) are valid in 2011, for which Audi has developed the “closed cockpit” R18. Older models like the R15 TDI may only compete in heavily modified form with greatly restricted engine power. Just how these cars will fare against the new models remains to be seen.
Drastic cuts in technology
The new LMP1 prototype regulations limit engine displacement for new models such as the Audi R18, which will contest its first race in May, to 3.7 liters. Older cars like the Audi R15 TDI will be slowed down accordingly. To this end, the 5.5 liter V10 engine in the Audi R15 TDI must now draw air through two intake-air restrictors of 33.5 millimeter diameter – this is four millimeters less than before. At the same time the boost pressure is reduced by 23 percent to 2,000 millibar – 2,590 millibar was allowed before. The fuel tank may only hold 65 instead of the previous 81 liters of diesel, the fuel flow restrictor in the autonomous refueling tank was also reduced by five to 28 millimeters. “The drivers felt the engine restrictions very clearly during the test in Florida. They miss several dozen horsepower,” explains Ralf Jüttner, Technical Director of Audi Sport Team Joest. “The reduction in tank volume sounds drastic at first, but the engine obviously also consumes less. The slower flow rate from the external tank means that pit stops will certainly not be any shorter despite the smaller fuel tank volume.”
Proven drivers, new partners
The Audi R15 TDI makes its farewell appearance in Florida in the hands of two successful driver line ups. Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas, who won at Sebring in 2008, share the car with start number “1” with Mike Rockenfeller. Dindo Capello/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish, the Sebring winners in 2009, drive the “2” numbered Audi.

Audi starts the 2011 sports car season in the 12 Hours of Sebring on March 19. Making its final appearance is the Audi R15 TDI, which had to be modified to comply with the new regulations and which carries the project name “R15 plus plus” internally. Timo Bernhard/Romain Dumas/Mike Rockenfeller (D/F/D), last year’s Le Mans winners, as well as Dindo Capello/Allan McNish/Tom Kristensen (I/GB/DK), Le-Mans winners from 2008, drive the two diesel race sports cars.
A long sports car season starts for Audi Sport Team Joest in March: On the agenda up to November are seven races, the Le Mans test weekend and numerous tests with the Audi R15 TDI and the new Audi R18, which does not, however, race at Sebring. So as not to interrupt preparations for the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 11/12 the test and development program with the R18 continues to run in parallel to the opening round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup 2011 (ILMC) season.
As a result one car in particular bids farewell at the 12 Hours of Sebring, a car that made its debut here two years ago: the Audi R15 TDI. It celebrated its 2009 premiere with a victory – the ninth for Audi in this traditional event in US state of Florida since 2000.
For the second appearance at Sebring the diesel racing sports car competes under completely new conditions. New technical regulations from the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) are valid in 2011, for which Audi has developed the “closed cockpit” R18. Older models like the R15 TDI may only compete in heavily modified form with greatly restricted engine power. Just how these cars will fare against the new models remains to be seen.
Drastic cuts in technology
The new LMP1 prototype regulations limit engine displacement for new models such as the Audi R18, which will contest its first race in May, to 3.7 liters. Older cars like the Audi R15 TDI will be slowed down accordingly. To this end, the 5.5 liter V10 engine in the Audi R15 TDI must now draw air through two intake-air restrictors of 33.5 millimeter diameter – this is four millimeters less than before. At the same time the boost pressure is reduced by 23 percent to 2,000 millibar – 2,590 millibar was allowed before. The fuel tank may only hold 65 instead of the previous 81 liters of diesel, the fuel flow restrictor in the autonomous refueling tank was also reduced by five to 28 millimeters. “The drivers felt the engine restrictions very clearly during the test in Florida. They miss several dozen horsepower,” explains Ralf Jüttner, Technical Director of Audi Sport Team Joest. “The reduction in tank volume sounds drastic at first, but the engine obviously also consumes less. The slower flow rate from the external tank means that pit stops will certainly not be any shorter despite the smaller fuel tank volume.”
Proven drivers, new partners
The Audi R15 TDI makes its farewell appearance in Florida in the hands of two successful driver line ups. Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas, who won at Sebring in 2008, share the car with start number “1” with Mike Rockenfeller. Dindo Capello/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish, the Sebring winners in 2009, drive the “2” numbered Audi.

ILMC/ALMS: Audi toma la delantera el Martes
Audi Sport ha tomado la delantera en los tests que comenzaron ayer en Sebring, preparatorios para las 12 horas del próximo Sábado, y que comenzaron ayer Lunes.
El Audi R15+ TDI pilotado por Timo Bernard, Romain Dumas y Mike Rockenfeller han conseguido un tiempo de 1:48.450 que ha sido el mejor registro en todo el día, aunque lo más significativo es que la mayoría de equipos han rodado más lentos que ayer. Así el tiempo de Audi era medio segundo más lento que el Lunes, mientras el mejor Peugeot 908, el de Stephane Sarrazin, Pedro Lamy y Franck Montagny, se iba a más de un segundo de los tiempos que lograron ayer.
Marc Gené, junto a Anthony Davidson y Alex Wurz, han continuado trabajando en los ajustes de su coche, siendo el piloto de Sabadell el que ha marcado algunos de los mejores tiempos de esta unidad.
Respecto al resto de españoles, Lucas Ordoñez ha conseguido en el día de hoy tiempos muy similares y próximos a los de Franck Mailleux y Soheil Ayari con el Oreca 03 Nissan de Signatech y son, por el momento, la referencia en LMP2. Antonio García también está desarrollando una gran labor de desarrollo en los reglajes del Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR que comparte con Tommy Milner y Olivier Beretta, y figura entre las primeras posiciones de los GT. Oriol Serviá, centrado en los tests de la IndyCar en Barber, todavía no ha comparecido con JaguarRSR.

La transmisión va por: ABC y ESPN3 lo que no tenemos ESPN3 en la página de ALMS(http://americanlemans.com) se puede ver también tanto clasificación como parte de la carrera

En cuanto a SPEED Channel Latinoamerica el sabado da inicio la transmision de la carrera en Vivo a las 8:00am mientras que la segunda parte de la transmision regresa a las 2:30pm.

Venezolanos Arrancan En Primera Fila En Sebring
La escudería NGT Motorsport se ubica al frente tanto en la clasificación IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge como en la clase GTC de American Le Mans Series
El piloto venezolano Carlos Kauffmann partirá en la segunda posición en la primera válida del campeonato IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama que se realiza en el autódromo de Sebring, en los Estados Unidos, carrera en la que compartirá la primera línea de salida con su compatriota y compañero de escudería, Henrique Cisneros.
Kauffmann manejó el Porsche 997/2011con un tiempo de 2:08.760 a un promedio de velocidad superior a los 164 kilómetros por hora, pole position o mejor tiempo absoluto que se apropió Cisneros con registro de 2:08.327. Hasta treinta y nueve máquinas tomaron parte en las clasificaciones para la primera de las dos carreras de la serie IMSA que se efectuarán dentro de la programación de la 59 edición anual Mobil 1 Doce Horas de Sebring presentado por “Fresh from Florida”.
Los dos pilotos del equipo NGT Motorsport también dominaron en los entrenamientos libres efectuados el miércoles en la clase GTC correspondientes a las clásicas 12 Horas de Sebring, donde Carlos Kauffmann fue el más veloz con tiempo de 2:06.700 en un Porsche 911 GT3, colocándose además en el trigésimo tercer lugar en la general que cuenta con la participación de 48 vehículos en cinco divisiones: LMP1, LMP2, LMPC, GT y GTC.
En la estelar competencia de larga duración los venezolanos Kauffmann y Cisneros estarán acompañados por el inglés Sean Edwards. Para la pareja venezolana se tratará de su debut en la tradicional prueba de endurance, clasificaciones definitivas que se efectuarán el viernes. Cada una de las dos carreras del torneo IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge tendrá un recorrido de 45 minutos cada una.
Las 12 Horas de Sebring abren la temporada en el campeonato American Le Mans Series y se disputarán este sábado 19 y la señal de salida se dará a las 10 y 30 de la mañana.
