Young Driver AMR aims for podium in Portugal - 05.05.2011

The GT1-World Championship travels all the way down to Portugal this weekend for the third round of the season in Portimão at the Algarve coast. After a good performance in the first two rounds and the first podium finish of the season in the last race in Belgium, Young Driver AMR hopes for more podium joy in Portugal.

Alex Müller (GER) and Tomas Enge (CZE) aim for their second consecutive podium finish in the #7 Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin DBR9, while Stefan Mücke (GER) and Darren Turner (GBR) want to execute their brilliant speed into a good amount of championship points. With the German round of the GT1-World Championship at the Sachsenring scheduled only seven days later, the Portugal event is the start of a very busy week for Young Driver AMR.

„We showed a good speed in the two opening rounds of the championship in Abu Dhabi and Zolder, on two very different tracks“, Young Driver AMR team principal Hardy Fischer says. „So I see no reason why we shouldn’t be quick in Portugal. Last year, we were running in second position, when we had some tires issues. I hope that we will have two trouble free races in Portugal. Alex and Tomas showed a very good performance at Zolder and Darren and Stefan had one of the quickest cars in the opening two rounds, but had bad luck in the race. I hope our Aston Martin will have two trouble free races, then we have a good chance for further improvement in the championship rankings.“

During the first visit of the GT1 World Championship in Portimão last year, Young Driver AMR was en route to a podium finish, when tire issues prevented Darren Turner und Tomas Enge from scoring a top result. Due to the earlier date of the event and the cooler ambient temperatures, it’s expected that this will not be an issue like last year.

Once the Portuguese round is finished, the Young Driver AMR team will busy load the trucks and head to back to Germany for the „home race“ of Young Driver AMR. The scenic Sachsenring near Chemnitz will host the GT1 World Championship for the first time only seven days after the Portugal event.

Alex Müller (#7 Young Driver-Aston Martin DBR9): „Portimão will certainly be a very hot race. The track is amazing, it’s a bit like the Nordschleife in Germany and I’m always very happy to race at Portimão. Tire wear will be an issue there, the key for a success in the race is to have a consistent tire performance. I expect that we will have a good speed there. A podium finish is our goal.“

Tomáš Enge (#7 Young Driver-Aston Martin DBR9): „Our Aston Martin showed a very good performance in the first two races of the season, so I see no point why we shouldn’t be competitive in Portimão. Before the Zolder event I would have been cautious to say something like this, but we were on the pace there and so I expect us to be on the pace also for the remaining tracks this season. But nevertheless it will be hard, although it will be not as warm as last year due to the earlier date. This will be helpful for the tire performance and also help our aero. I don’t expect a drop in the tire performance like we had last year, because this season we have two sets of tires more for the free practise, that helps our tire strategy for the two races.“

Stefan Mücke (#8 Young Driver-Aston Martin DBR9): „Portimão is a great track, though one which not necessarily favours the Aston Martin. The track is very hard on tires and the key will be to find a set up, which is consistent and not hard on tires. Considering the performance we had in the two opening rounds, a podium finish will not be easy, but should be possible.“

Darren Turner (#8 Young Driver-Aston Martin DBR9): „I’m really looking forward to Portimão, it’s a very challenging circuit and I love this track. Last year we were ok in Portugal and this season we were ok in the first rounds, so I’m quite optimistic for Portimão. In the first two round of the championship, we had a good pace. If we will have a weekend without any issue, I’m confident we can grab a big bag of points.“

Last-gasp effort puts Aston Martin top

Aston Martin Young Driver made the ideal start to the weekend as a last-gasp effort from Stefan Mucke in the No.8 DB9 earned him and team-mate Darren Turner top spot in Free Practice.

The opening session of the weekend had been dominated by the No.40 and No.41 Marc VDS Ford GTs, which traded blows at the top of the timesheets for almost the entire 80 minutes.

Mucke and Turner had remained within the top four for much of the session however, and with just thirty seconds remaining Mucke produced his best lap – and the session’s best – with a 1m42.736s.

It proved to be just enough, with Mucke and Turner ending just three thousandths of a second ahead of previous pacesetters Maxime Martin and new team-mate Yann Clairay in the No.41 Marc VDS Ford. Clairay is deputising for Frederic Makowiecki, who competes in the Spa 1000km this weekend.

Third spot was claimed by Bas Leinders and Marc Hennerici in the No.40 Marc VDS Ford. Having been fastest for the opening ten minutes, the pair had also topped the timesheets with fifteen minutes remaining before eventually dropping to third, just over one tenth of a second shy of the outright pace.

The No. 23 Nissan JRM of Michael Krumm and Lucas Luhr was the only other car to enjoy a spell at the top, with the German pair the first to dip under the 1m43s bracket an hour into the session. They eventually ended fourth fastest.

Lamborghini occupied fifth spot through the No.37 All-Inkl Murcielago of Nicky Pastorelli and Dominik Schwager, while the second JRM Nissan GT of Peter Dumbreck and Richard Westbrook rounded out the top six.

The No.7 Young Driver Aston Martin DB9 of Tomas Enge and Alex Muller finished seventh fastest despite carrying 10kg of success ballast from Zolder.

The weight penalties told further down the order however, with current championship leaders Markus Winkelhock and Marc Basseng in the No.38 All-Inkl Lamborghini finishing 14th fastest. They carry 50kg of ballast this weekend as a result of a superb double-victory last time out at Zolder.

The GT1 teams will return to the circuit at 14:25 local time for Pre-Qualifying, before the weekend starts in earnest with Qualifying at 11:15 local time on Saturday.

Opiniones de algunos pilotos:

Nicky Pastorelli,
nr37 All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport Lamborghini Murcielago 670 R-SV

"Today was good, The car feels good on new tyres, now we just need to work a little bit more on the used tyres set-up for the race. We are really looking forward to actually finishing the race. Hopefully we can manage that and get some points.

Jamie Campbell-Walter
nr21 Sumo Power GT Nissan GT-R

"We are still a bit off the pace. We didn't really run this morning as the guys needed a bit more time to work on the car after the accident in Zolder. So we are on the back foot slightly in terms of optimising the set-up. We are nearly in the sweet spot and hopefully we will find that little bit between now and Qualifying.

"We need the Sumo Power team to have a good result for the morale of the boys because they have worked very hard. There has been a lot of work behind the scenes. Even last night they didn't get back to the hotel until 5 o'clock in the morning. The knock-on effect of having too big crashes creates a lot of extra work and negativity so hopefully we can give the boys a positive result by the end of the weekend."

Alex Muller
nr7 Young Driver AMR Aston Martin DB9

"We played with the car, we tried some different set-up configurations in preparation for the race. It's nice to be at the front but here in the Algarve the race will come down to tyres. Last year was the same. We need a decent Qualifying and a clean race and end up with some points and maybe even the podium."

Tomas Enge
Nr7 Young Driver AMR Aston Martin DB9

"This car is not so good around a circuit like this where you have a lot of slow first, second gear corners and a lot of heavy acceleration out of these corners. There are not enough high-speed corners where usually this car is good. But we have to deal with it like everyone else and find some improvement to qualify well and set ourselves up for the race."

Bas Leinders,
Nr40 Marc VDS Racing Team Ford GT Matech

"We had a problem with the oil tank so we had to change a part in that which cost us half an hour. Then Marc went out and did a few laps and the times were not too bad but then he made a mistake and spun into the gravel. We didn't find a lot to imporove the car. We can see again that the Nissans and the Lambos are blindingly fast so we have some catching up to do."

Matteo Bobbi,
Nr47 DKR Engineering Corvette Z06

"I am very happy to be back in the championship. For me it was the first time in the Corvette so we have some work to do. It's a great track, I've raced here before in GT1 in the past and LMS. It's very close racing and I'm sure it will be a good race. The other Corvette is a lot faster than us with the same car. We were close in Zolder so we have to analyse why we are not on their pace. Tomorrow and Sunday is what matters."

Christian Hohenadel
nr4 Hexis AMR Aston Martin DB9

"With the ups and downs the very fast and slow corners it is essential to get a good rhythm around here. Furthermore you have to watch you tyres to do a couple of good laps."

Stef Dusseldorp
nr3 Hexis AMR Aston Martin DB9

"The track is quite new to me, so it's a big challenge. We want to score as many points as possible, again. We still have some extra weight in the car, so we have to be carefull with that. If we have a good race speed and a good pitstop, we can add some more points to our championship."

A good day and a good track for Nissan who put three cars in the top three spots during the Qualifying at the Autodromo Internacional Algarve. Richard Westbrook and Peter Dumbreck went fastest in the nr22 JR Motorsports Nissan GT-R, with at time of 1:42.427. In second, 0.090 behind the pole sitters, Enrique Bernoldi and Ricardo Zonta set a lap of 1:42.517 in the nr20 Sumo Power GT Nissan GT-R. Lucas Luhr and Michael Krumm were third quickest, with a time of 1:42.574 in the nr23 JR Motorsports Nissan GT-R.

The 4th Nissan GT-R of the championship came 5th in qualifying, with the nr21 Sumo Power GT of David Brabham and Jamie Campbell-Walter setting a lap of 1:43.061, 0.634 behind the pole setters and three tenths behind the Young Driver AMR Aston Martin of Stefan Mucke and Darren Turner.

UPDATE: Following Stewards Decision n°6, the nr8 Young Driver AMR Aston Martin DB9, driven by Mücke, had all its times cancelled, and will start the qualifying race from 8th. Meaning that all four Nissans will occupy the top 4 spots on the grid.

Opiniones de los Pilotos de Nissan al terminar la Clasificacion:

Richard Westbrook
nr22 JR Motorsports Nissan GT-R

“It’s brilliant to have three Nissans up here – I’m surrounded by all my mates and it’s great company! All the hard work that has gone into the program is paying off, but to be honest this track is perfect for our car, and if we can’t win here we don’t really have much hope for the rest of the year!
“We have to make the most of our performance here because it might not happen at Sachsenring. I was a bit surprised to get pole as there was a bit of guess work on the conditions and the tyre pressures, and I also want to thank my team-mate for getting through Q2 on one set of tyres - we did our job today!"

Peter Dumbreck
nr22 JR Motorsports Nissan GT-R

“I imagine there might be a meeting before the race, with everyone sat down and told to behave. It’s very important to really make the most of this and bring home a good result for Nissan, JRM and Sumo Power, so I think we have to be gentle with each other at the start.
"Last time I started a race here I led it until we had a problem in the pits in the Championship Race last year, so I hope to do exactly the same: hand over to Richard and hopefully he’ll bring it home for a win."

Enrique Bernoldi
nr20 Sumo Power GT Nissan GT-R

“I have to thank Ricardo for passing Q2, which this year has been very difficult. He did a good job, especially as he didn’t know the track. So then I was in the position to fight for the front, and in Q3 I was more confident and improved my time a bit.
"It’s a track that suits the Nissan, so starting from second I think is good - especially as we are surrounded by our team-mates. Hopefully the season starts here for us, and we can score points for Nissan – that’s important for me, Ricardo and also for the whole team."

Ricardo Zonta
nr20 Sumo Power GT Nissan GT-R

“It was quite difficult for me because it was the first time I put new on the car here, and I was trying to understand where the grip was with the new tyres. I didn’t want to risk too much but I needed to go fast enough to get through – and in the end it was okay. The lap time was not that quick but it was enough to pass through, and then Enrique did a very good lap.
“I think it’s very good to have the three Nissan cars first. The race will be very difficult, but we have to score points.”

Lucas Luhr
nr23 JR Motorsports Nissan GT-R

“It’s really good for us and Nissan that we are here starting 1-2-3, but we just need to make the most of it for Nissan, JRM and Sumo Power because there is a lot of effort going into it. Here and there we have showed potential without making the best of it, so I think now is the time to bring home some decent results and good points. It’s our best qualifying result so far and if we can match in the Championship Race and this afternoon it’s going to be a good weekend.”

Michael Krumm
nr23 JR Motorsports Nissan GT-R

“For one lap we have good pace, but the race is a completely different story. I did a good lap time, but we have seen yesterday that Lamborghini even with a lot of weight can go faster than that. This is our best track so if we don’t win here it’s a problem obviously, but we should not forget that other cars even with more weight can be quicker than us. We have to work hard for this afternoon, as it’s going to be a tough battle to stay where we are now.”

Richard Westbrook, JRM Nissan GT-R No.22

“I just want to thank my team-mate and everyone at Nissan and JRM - it’s one hell of an achievement to have three cars on the podium. There is a lot of hard work that has gone into this, and while this track is good for us it’s so important we make the most of it.

“Well done to these boys and their crew (the No.23 JRM team), they did a good stop and beat us in the pit lane. It’s so close with all of us that a quick pit stop can change everything. I felt like I had a better car than Lucas (Luhr) in the first few laps though, I could see him struggling particularly in the last corner so I thought ‘here’s my chance’, went for it and got the lead. Sure enough he came back at me later and had the legs on me, and it wasn’t easy in the last few laps. You can definitely overtake here, so the race tomorrow is wide open - we have some improvements to make and we have better tyres so we’re looking forward to it.”

Peter Dumbreck, JRM Nissan GT-R No.22

“My start wasn’t the best ever, I think I was a bit preoccupied with avoiding the marbles on the last corner. Ricardo (Zonta) got the jump on me a little bit, but I took him on the brakes into the first corner and then I saw him get tagged in my mirrors. It turned out to be a good thing for me because it got me nice clean air, so I got my head down and pushed. I saw Michael (Krumm) coming, so from there it was just a case of trying to control the race, not let Michael get too close to me and just trying to do my job getting ready to hand over to Richard.

“The pit stops were still to come and I was pretty happy with my pace, so I wasn’t too worried that Michael might do something crazy. He stayed with me and we gradually just pulled away from the others. I would have liked to be in one lap earlier (to the pits), but with how the race panned out Richard was struggling with the tyres towards the end so it was actually perfectly played. The No.23 car jumped us in the pits but luckily Richard is a good driver and could pass him back again. I don’t think I would have done it, but fair play to him – a perfect move.”

Michael Krumm, JRM Nissan GT-R No.23

“I think Peter (Dumbreck) didn’t get away very well, so I went to the left and I saw Peter Kox I think on the inside and I was expecting an accident already. I just took it easy, went to the outside and was really careful, and I think (Ricardo) Zonta was spun and I was lucky to avoid that accident. I found myself in P2 which was great, and from there on the race was pretty easy – the target was just to stay as close to Peter as possible and that’s what I did. Three Nissans on the podium – it’s absolutely fantastic.”

Lucas Luhr, JRM Nissan GT-R No.23

“First of all, our guys did a great pit stop and as I came down the main straight I saw Richard (Westbrook) coming out of the pit lane. On my out lap I already was struggling with front grip, and I was struggling a lot in the last corners. I saw Richard coming, he had a huge run on me out of the last corner and he dived down the inside – I could have closed it a little bit but at the end we are team-mates and it’s important we have a good result for Nissan.

"Also I didn’t have the weapons to fight at that time so I thought maybe I could come back later. I did, but it was a really good move by Richard into turn one and it was fair, so it was clear from my side not to do anything stupid. The big points come tomorrow however and we have some improvements to make to our car. Hopefully all three cars can be back tomorrow for the Championship Race – that would be really great for Nissan.”

David Brabham, Sumo Power Nissan GT-R No.21

“A bit like Peter (Dumbreck), I didn’t make a great start and had two guys either side of me. The Lamborghini on my right was a bit of a danger and I think it made contact with Ricardo (Zonta) which was a shame for those guys. I managed to avoid the accident, and then it was a case of trying to hang on to the JRM guys which I managed for a few laps, and then I was struggling for grip and losing three or four tenths and it got worse. Then it was a case of trying to hang on and just hand over to Jamie (Campbell-Walter). The guys to our left (JRM) did a cracking job all weekend and we know that we will have a very strong race tomorrow.”

Jamie Campbell-Walter, Sumo Power Nissan GT-R No.21

“If we look back to Zolder we had two DNFs, so Sumo Power team were pretty down in the dumps. To bounce back and have three cars on the podium is absolutely fantastic, not only for Sumo Power but also for JRM and Nissan. All credit to them, the Sumo guys have had a hard three weeks since Zolder to repair the cars and we’ve had a few little problems here from knock-on effects, so to be third is fantastic – well done to everybody in the whole team really.

"We had a great pit stop actually, it’s something I think all four crews have improved on massively, but unfortunately because Brabs was so up the road compared to some of the other cars that came in we lost maybe two or three seconds when I had to stop for the Lamborghini coming in. We definitely have to make some little improvements to our car tomorrow, these guys were a little bit quicker, but we’ll nibble away at it and hopefully have a good result and be here tomorrow.”

Stefan Mucke, Young Driver Aston Martin No.8

"Today was the maximum we could do - fourth place behind the Nissans. They look much too strong as do the Lambos from the lap times. Our tyres lasted and our lap times were very consistent which is important and good to know for tomorrow.

"I am looking forward to tomorrow but I don't think we have a realistic to get a podium position unless something happens up front. Again today there were a few accidents at the first couple of corners so we have to stay out of trouble tomorrow for the first few laps and try for a consistent race and some decent points."

Dominik Schwager, All-Inkl Munnich Motorsport Lamborghini No.37

"I guess we have to be happy that we finished the race but bad luck still hangs around our car. Even if we had qualified better and started from the front row the best we could have done was fourth or fifth. Our target for sure tomorrow is a podium but it will be difficult. To pass a Nissan here is tough. Even if you can manage it, the difference in straight-line speed will make it difficult to stay in front.

"We know where could be, we have good pace in the car. It's the first time we brought the car home which is a positive start, so let's hope we can now build from that."

Nicky Catsburg, Exim Bank Team China Corvette No.11

"The start was quite lucky. But after that the guys around me were too quick so I had to push too much so in the end my tyres were gone, especially the rears. Mike (Hezemans) did a good stint to do not a really fast time in the beginning but still doing the same time in the end. I can learn from that because normally I am a bit more rough on the tyres.

"We are going to try some changes in the warm-up so maybe we can fight for fifth, sixth seventh tomorrow. I was also going to do GT3 today but my team-mate crashed the car in Qualifying so no more GT3 for me this weekend."

Yann Clairay, Marc VDS Ford GT No.41

"The race was not too bad for comeback to GT1. I don't know the car too well. Maxime did a good job and I was happy with my stint. It is a good position for tomorrow and maybe we can go one or two places better in the Championship Race. It seems like here you have the Nissan race and all the other cars in their own race."

Lucas Luhr, JRM Nissan GT-R No.23

“First of all I have to admit that I was a bit nervous that we would all get through the first corner OK. Obviously that worked out today. I had a good start and I was side-by-side with Richard (Westbrook) but I couldn’t do him in the first corner so I backed off. He seemed to be struggling a little in the first one and a half laps then he just hooked up and took off of me. I just tried to build a gap to the guys behind me and stay close to Richard.

“Our boys did a great job at the pit stop which allowed Michael (Krumm) to come out of the pits one and half seconds behind Peter. Obviously our sister car had a problem at the end but that’s the way racing is, sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are unlucky. With the 1-2-3 yesterday, it has been a good weekend for us.”

Michael Krumm, JRM Nissan GT-R No.23

“Today the conditions were very much hotter so it was difficult for everyone to protect the tyres for the whole stint. I was sitting close to Peter (Dumbreck) and I thought it is going to be a really long battle to the end. I backed off a little and thought I would cool it and wait for the last 10 minutes when the tyres had dropped off more to have a better chance for a move to take the lead.

“Then suddenly there was no warning going up the hill, he just slowed down immediately and I almost ran into him. Of course I was relieved that I didn’t have to battle with a team-mate because we don’t want to crash into each other. It was a shame because they won yesterday and they deserved to win as much as we did today.”

Darren Turner, Young Driver Aston Martin No.8

“I was very conscious of how strong the Nissans had been over the weekend and having David (Brabham) behind me was quite daunting at times. I just thought well he’s been my team-mate before and what would he do in this situation, just stay calm so I thought if I stayed calm and make no mistakes there wouldn’t be an opening for him to squeeze through. From the fact that we started 13th on the grid yesterday and moved up to fourth in the first race and ended up on the podium today and really been the only car that’s managed to take the shine off the Nissans, I am very pleased with the Aston and the team.”

Stefan Mucke, Young Driver Aston Martin No.8

“The whole first stint was very close. I had no chance to overtake the Nissans, they were just too strong on the straights. The car was good over distance and we were not expecting that here on this circuit so I have to thank the team for giving us a consistent car. The pit stop was just brilliant and we won the third position at the pit stop. It was a good team result for us.”

Jamie-Campbell Walter, Sumo Power Nissan GT-R No.21

“It was nice to get through the first corner all nice and clean after the last few races we’ve had so that was good. Unfortunately our tyre pressures went way too high from a very early stage so Stefan (Mucke) was able to keep me honest and I had to work very hard to drive as smoothly as possible and not to overdrive the car because the pressures were going up and up. I managed to hold the position until the pit stop. It’s a fantastic result for Sumo after what happened in Zolder.”

David Brabham, Sumo Power Nissan GT-R No.21

“After Zolder it was a bit soul-destroying for the team. They had two cars to repair and a hell of a lot of work to be done. Yesterday when we got here the car wasn’t still quite 100 per cent so we lost a session with that. It’s been a fantastic recovery. This racing is great. Any slip-up and you’re going to get nailed. I am really enjoying it. Darren (Turner) was as strong as I was out there. I just couldn’t get close enough. I was trying to put pressure on Darren but he didn’t make a mistake and they richly deserve their second place.”

Peter Kox, Swiss Racing Team Lamborghini No.5

“We had a good result, especially if you see we started from the back of the Qualifying Race because I got turned around from P6 in qualifying. It was our best result, so it was a shame I got a push. To come from there to finish fifth in the Championship Race is not a bad result. It is a new car and we are still learning but the team keep getting better. They did a great job in the pit stops, and we got good points – now we just try to keep doing that and we will see where we are at the end of the year.”

Marc Basseng, All-Inkl Munnich Motorsport Lamborghini No.38

“It was really difficult for me to pick up speed because of my tyres and the weight we had. The fight we had was really cool though, really fair racing which was enjoyable, and the points we gained were perfect. I saw the No.22 (Nissan JRM) struggling which means we keep the lead in the championship, so it was a good weekend for us and also for the No.37 – the first time they finished both races and they scored good points. I am really pleased as a driver and a team manager.”

Michael Rossi, DKR Corvette No.47

“Really good relationship with Matteo Bobbi, but this is the only good thing from the weekend. The rhythm, the lap time, the new engineer, the car problem – really we don’t know yet the problem. Very professional, good for the driving change and we are on the same pace, so positive for the future.”

Christopher Nygaard, Belgian Racing Ford GT No.9

“We definitely made an improvement today compared to yesterday. We have been working hard to improve the car, and today we were not far away. It was a pleasure to drive – the team was making it easy for me. I made some mistakes myself yesterday and we were struggling a bit, but we were able to use the data from the VDS guys and that helped a lot.”

Bas Leinders, Marc VDS Ford GT No.40

“It was not too bad a race – Marc (Hennerici) made a good start and we had good pace, but it was a struggle to pass even when we had good slipstreams, especially on the Nissan. Luckily some of the drivers made mistakes - I don’t and I take care of the tyres, so we were able to get by. The problem is the Ford can be third with a bit of luck, but it is so hard to win races. We have a very good driver line-up, with Maxime (Martin), Fred (Makowiecki) and Marc but we are struggling.”

Dominik Schwager, All-Inkl Munnich Motorsport Lamborghini No.37

“In the early stages I was overtaken by the Nissan and there was no way I could hold him back on the straight, so I just tried to keep it clean and stay out of trouble. For us though it is the first time we have finished both races, and from now on we have to push for the championship. This for sure was not a Lamborghini track but we could have been on the front row in qualifying. We were a little bit surprised by that, but hopefully we have had our bad luck out the way and the season starts now.”
